One theory about why many Americans don't vote is the cost-benefit model. There are several costs to voting--registering, studying the candidates, going to the poll, etc. But, there are very few benefits since your vote is unlikely to change the outcome.

The difference is between capitulation and resistance.


It makes a dent. Even though the winning party will push through their agenda, it becomes a fact that they only won with a percentage of the vote. Not 100%.

Besides, even if a county is predominantly one party, it's important to realize that about 70% of American voters are against either the Democrats or the Republicans. The abortion vote in Kansas last summer is an excellent example.

I think the number of seats rather than the percentage of the votes determines their success. Lyndon Johnson had a great reputation for getting Congress to pass his programs, but he had a huge majority.

A Republican House majority will keep Biden from any more huge spending programs and Biden will keep them from passing any dumb stuff. We will probably have to suffer some investigations. Republicans just announced a 1,000 page report about politicization of the FBI.

A problem, and an advantage, is that House elections all come every two years. Sure, the Republicans will take it this time, but can they hold it? Or will they fuck it up?

Sixteen percent of those aged 55 and older said the U.S. is headed in the right direction, compared to 8 percent of those aged 35 to 54 and 5 percent of those aged 18 to 34....Nearly half of respondents named gas prices or inflation, which is the highest in decades, as their biggest concern.

“The state of the economy has Americans in a foul mood,” said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute. “They are not happy with Washington.”
