Rent Control

What a load of crap!
I beg your pardon? Which point be excremental, in your sage opinion?

The fact -- or purported fact -- that Grind was raised in a privileged household, even as I was myself, is most certainly a stroke of luck. Good fortune, as they say. It is also probably the result of hard work and sacrifice on the part of his parents, but that's almost immaterial. Hard word and sacrifice don't guarantee success. Unfortunately, they're also far more likely to produce financial success when the hard workers sacrificing their time were born to successful families.

You want to know what's wrong with this country? It's people who can't or won't put themselves into the place of another even so far as to grasp that renting a place to live isn't always a matter of choice.

sure; just like the old soviet union...and we all know how THAT turned out!

We have a mixture of private and public housing.

What drives house prices up in the UK is people buying second, third or forth houses to rent out, making it extremely difficult to get onto the housing market.

Because it is so hard to get onto the housing market, there is always plenty of takers for rented accomodation, which continues the vicious cycle...

Alright lets put that logic to work. There are those that do not have luck in their lives. Why stop with lower rent costs? They should be charged less than market value for other purchases as well, a six pack of soda, an admission ticket to a movie, a monthly cable tv bill to name a few. If indeed they have no luck in their lives why should we begrudge them the benifit of such experiences that other may enjoy?

There is no such thing as "property rights." It's a purely social construct, subject to revision at any time as all social constructs are.

In the practical sense, when we treat property rights as absolute, it facilitates the concentration of power/wealth into the hands of the landed even more quickly than otherwise.

Rent control EVERY neighborhood and the problems with it go away. Therein lies the answer.

So you think the SCOTUS was correct with their ruling on eminent domain?

Rent control is one of those things that can be cloaked by the "intention" of its proponents as being noble. It is helping the little guy. It protects the less fortunate from the rising costs of living in this country! Hooray for Rent Control!

I'm middle class, don't make a whole lot of money, and I pay through the teeth to live in this shoebox in Warner Center. But other people in the same building pay less than 1/3 of what I pay (even though 1/3 has been proven to be an imaginary number, much like i, the square root of negative 1). They only leave when they die, and they are tying up about 1/5th of the building. (1/5th is a real number, because of base 10)

Simple economics. The owner of the building has to get as much as they can for apartments, and the reduction in supply due to rent control increases demand, and I pay more. I'm the "little guy" and I pay more. Thanks for all the good intentions socialists. But I'd rather do without them.

Well, why charge them at all? The product of the work of others is valueless and should be treated as such!
[/sarcasm]

:D

It's the plan to do away with the Middle Class, they pretend like it is the Right Wing that does it, but the Middle gets pulled from both sides....

Irony update: I just got notice that the apartments rent is going up to $1,735 per month. I wonder if the rent controlled people's rent is going up too?

If you like the whole redistribution system, move to Cuba. Take it the hell out of our country though.

Holy Hell!!

what is that supposed to mean?

Money has never been an issue for me or my family....

I don't need student loans, financial aid, or anything... we have plenty of money.

when am I gonna get that portion of all that money that you owe me?

Which is fine, but is a matter of luck. The lucky have an unfortunate tendency to begrudge assistance to the less fortunate: it's one of the oldest stories in the world.

you sound like a good student...can you help me out

A young woman was about to finish her first year of college.

Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat, and was very much in favor of the redistribution of wealth.

She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch Republican, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.

One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the addition of more government welfare programs. The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the truth and she indicated so to her father.

He responded by asking how she was doing in school. Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn't even have time for a boyfriend, and didn't really have many college friends because she spent all her time studying.

Her father listened and then asked, "How is you friend Audrey doing?" She replied, "Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies, and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so popular on campus, college for her is a blast. She's always invited to all the parties, and lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes because she's too hung over. "

Her wise father asked his daughter, "Why don't you go to the Dean's office and ask him to deduct a 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA."

The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily fired back, "That wouldn't be fair! I have worked really hard for my grades! I've invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!"

The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, "Welcome to the Republican Party."

That really sucks Beefy. I rent myself. A four bedroom house with a large kitchen and living room, front and back porch on an acre and a half. Rents $650 a month.

I don't think getting rid of the rent controls would help you though, just gives the owner more profit as the other apartments would now rent for the same thing your paying.
