We always referred to them as 'special needs'. Same as in dentistry.
Incredible that one who actually taught them refers to them as retards.

Exactly...they would not...not ever.....I started my career in Special Ed as a swimming coach...and went on to teach...and coach...When I started, the classification was Developmentally Handicapped...Trust me, no teacher would ever use that word....

It changes quite often...I think there are at least a dozen classifications now when it comes to eligibility for special ed and related services...developmentally delayed or intellectual disability are often used....
My certification was DH....
