Russia and Qatar will host World Cups

No, I recognize that there are serious questions concerning corruption at FIFA. I just don't see any actual evidence of corruption influencing this decision. The only thing that you and yours point to as evidence of corruption is how fucking awesome the US and UK are and how much better host countries they would be than Russia and Qatar.

My God Nigel, you are usually more discriminating. Read this first and then tell me that there is no evidence.

To the soccer lovers I apologize. I'd rather watch curling than watch soccer. Soccer is one of my least favorite sports....right alongside hockey and auto racing of any kind. I just can't stand to watch hours of a "sport" where the only excitement comes once to maybe 3 or 4 times in 3-4 hours. I loved to play baseball and even turned down a scholarship to play in college...but I don't even like to watch that on TV. That said, I can understand the skepticism on the part of the Brits and Americans at this decision. I know it turned out OK in Africa but Qatar isn't Africa. Quite frankly it would scare me some to travel there...but then I'm a 'fraidy cat anyway. If only Morgan hadn't missed a page.... ;)

A game of football lasts 90 minutes so where your 3 or 4 hours comes from is beyond me. Even if a game goes to extra time that is only another 30 minutes.

I'm not likely to read it. Look, I understand that there is corruption in FIFA. It just seems to me that the reactions to the announcement are based on the patriotism/nationalism more than anything else, but I could be wrong.

And what is wrong with reactions based on Patriotism or Nationalism. Is it wrong to think that the country one is from is better suited to host such an event? Is it wrong to think we (USA or GB) have more to offer than some other countries? I will always think that we're the best.

Today is the 4th day of Spirit Week at our school. It is favorite jersey day. There are OU and OSU jersey's everywhere...accompanied by a couple of Texas jerseys. Don't think I don't ridicule the wearers of the Texas jerseys as being disloyal to thier state. I am very nationalistic...and even more state-istic....if you'll allow me to create a word.

To be perfectly honest i would rather the English FA have not bid at all and was never expecting England to get close to winning the bid. Russia was where Sepp Blatter wanted it to go and that's where it went despite all the technical and commercial reports recommending England as the best of the candidates. Spain/Portugal probably had more of shock at hearing the news of their failure than most people in this country (no matter how the press will report it tomorrow morning).

I was more surprised at the Qatar bid winning though. However you put it the US bid was far stronger than Qatar in terms of the stadia, transport links, the "legacy" FIFA seem so keen to emphasise, and in terms of generating cash. Personally, i'd have preferred Australia to get it as they haven't held a world cup before but choosing to play in an unpopulated desert in average Summer temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius is fucking mental.

Football is the triumph of quality over quantity, a 0-0 draw can be almost as exciting as a win if both teams play well. The US once tried to get the goalposts widened to enable more goals, it was dismissed out of hand.

Of course i immediately thought, "Ties are like kissing your sister." I wonder where that came from anyway...who would want to kiss their sister. I was sure glad when college football implemented an overtime so we could have an eventual winner when a game ended in a tie.

The push to change the goalpoast width was stupid, IMO. I figure they were trying to make the sport gain in popularity over here by trying to make it easier to score. They shouldn't do that. Besides, as this country grows more Hispanic, we are seeing soccer gain in popularity all the time. It will eventually have a large audience here.

Anyway, I have long ago resigned that there are differences in tastes when it comes to most aspects of life...sports included. After all, you guys like tea in little cups, hot...not in huge glasses over ice sweetened to syrup by sugar. ;) I will never belittle someone for liking a sport but am glad I am not forced to watch. Alas, I think my son is starting to become keen on soccer so one day I may be forced to watch it after all.

I think once you participate in a soccer match, or futball, then you realize that it is a difficult and challenging game. A thinking person's game!

Like Chess...only faster paced. Aha...that's why they made that Geico commercial. ;)

Couldn't one argue that the UK is perceived as a bad choice, because of the Hooligans?

Not really, no. Our hooligan problem of the 80's has long ago moved elsewhere. The major problems today are in Eastern Europe (Russia is a prime example where right-wing hooligan groups are on the rise)

The 'hooligan' problem still exists on a much smaller scale but its pretty much dead inside stadiums nowadays (although there was a minor pitch invasion last night which was blown up into a 'major' incident by the press). The police are well on top of the hoolies domestically. There are cameras everywhere, most of the old boys are on banning orders and if you're picked up you'll be guaranteed a hefty stretch inside. If we'd got the World Cup there'd be next to zero trouble (maybe some aggro with the scotch but they probably won't qualify anyway) as foreign hooligans are reluctant to come here (or travel anywhere for that matter)

The only real trouble comes when England travel in numbers to nearby western European states and rival fans fancy their chances or it kicks off with the police. You get away with a lot more abroad.

(Reading that back i sound like i'm a character in The Firm or something. I'm not a hoolie, honest.)
