I should have said ' If the Russians were to annex Ukraine then NATO sanctions would force Germany to abandon Nord Stream '

What they are doing is refusing to open it till Russia caves to demands mostly written by the Americans.....this is yet more bullying of the sort that China will charge for.

The US is high on its successes- which, if you look closely, are mostly illusory. The US didn't win WW2, for example- and the first human moon landing was an international effort- following the Russians making a ' hard landing ' first, ten years earlier with Luna 1. ' American exceptionalism ' is largely responsible for the universal divisions evident today.
This doesn't mean that the US is no good. It simply means that the US is not as good as it thinks it is.

Germany is a very densely populated, very advanced economy. It would be hard to make it self sufficient on energy, or natural resources in general. They take in natural resources, and put out industrial output.
