Salmonella, Chicken Eggs, and American Regulation...

Faced with a crisis more than a decade ago in which thousands of people were sickened from salmonella in infected eggs, farmers in Britain began vaccinating their hens against the bacteria. That simple but decisive step virtually wiped out the health threat.

(So did the US learn a lesson from somewhere else? Can you guess?)

But when American regulators created new egg safety rules that went into effect last month, they declared that there was not enough evidence to conclude that vaccinating hens against salmonella would prevent people from getting sick. The Food and Drug Administration decided not to mandate vaccination of hens — a precaution that would cost less than a penny per a dozen eggs.

(Nope)...

Thats why I grow my own eggs. The only thing they give us is horrible farts. No illness tho.

Where the hell were you, for your debate?

Dude, I didn't even know about until after it happened. Then I saw a couple of grind's messages on my profile saying my debate was gonna be at 3:00 in the morning or something! I can't pull that shit off.

Besides, i'm not really around lately. Its horrible moderating that even scheduled my shit for debate.

You should have responded; because they would have allowed the time difference, so that it would have worked out.

the big thing these days is less regulation

so we got less regulation and less safe food...among other things

Back in my hellraising days I used to gross folks out at parties by popping a raw egg in a glass, covering it with whiskey and chugging it down. One time I wasn't so lucky and got salmonella. After the initial few hours of excreting out both ends at once I was in bed, flat on my face for three days. Ever since then I cook my eggs, thoroughly.

Salmonella is going to be in a good percentage of the eggs that you eat. There's no way around it unless you irradiate them or cook them all the way.

Or you could just vaccinate the hens at the "massive" cost of 1 cent per dozen, I'm willing to pay an extra penny per dozen for the safer egg...

Seriously, if I owned a chicken farm I'd do this and advertise that my eggs were safer than those crappy "inferior" eggs... I'd be able to charge a full nickel more and increase my profit margin. We don't need regulation, we need better PR teams at the farms.

Regulation failed here.

Also, don't most regulators watch porn sites all day?

Isn't that what most of my tax money goes for?

I agree.

Damo, I am surmising that though you live in the sticks like I do you don't have your own hens and still buy your eggs. It is much cheaper to buy the eggs from the market than it is to raise and keep laying hens. I buy mine as well. Sometimes I get fresh eggs from a lady at church too. I also would be willing to pay a penny per dozen extra for the safeguards. I see this as another area of government that has failed and is now high-lighted.

But people won't pay it damo. Race to the bottom. health is no concern when profits are involved. Libertarian smokes self = damo film at eleven.

Maybe, but most farms sell through socialist co-ops, so you don't have the vertical integration necessary to make that an effective marketing campaign. The buyer doesn't even know who the farmer is.

I always make sure to cook the eggs. No licking the spoon in batters made with eggs. ;)

Never had a problem.

I've never had a problem eating cooked but runny eggs either but I like 'em cooked through better. Plus the plate are easier to clean. Raw egg white used to be the main ingredient in some paints because once a raw egg dies on something its more or less permanent. You can't put a plate in the dishwasher and turn the machine on hours later and expect the stuff to come off with mere detergent, bleach and hot water.
