Salmonella, Chicken Eggs, and American Regulation...

Faced with a crisis more than a decade ago in which thousands of people were sickened from salmonella in infected eggs, farmers in Britain began vaccinating their hens against the bacteria. That simple but decisive step virtually wiped out the health threat.

(So did the US learn a lesson from somewhere else? Can you guess?)

But when American regulators created new egg safety rules that went into effect last month, they declared that there was not enough evidence to conclude that vaccinating hens against salmonella would prevent people from getting sick. The Food and Drug Administration decided not to mandate vaccination of hens — a precaution that would cost less than a penny per a dozen eggs.

(Nope)...
Sniff, sniff....do you smell the foul stench (pun intended) of lobbyist?

Damo, I am surmising that though you live in the sticks like I do you don't have your own hens and still buy your eggs. It is much cheaper to buy the eggs from the market than it is to raise and keep laying hens. I buy mine as well. Sometimes I get fresh eggs from a lady at church too. I also would be willing to pay a penny per dozen extra for the safeguards. I see this as another area of government that has failed and is now high-lighted.
I see this as a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. If the Government regulators did require vaccination then someone would be complaining that there paying this awful amount of money to protect 3 midgets from Hobokin who got sick eating raw chicken heads. Know what I mean?

So are you argueing for more egg regulations?

Do you ever actually read threads before you spout off?

(Although I will note that if you do support regulation for something like this, you should question your Fearless Leader as to why his Administration didn't support it.)

The "free market" will make eggs healthy. Like it has so far.

I read it, it seems you were complaining that the regulators did not impose a regulation that would have been helpfull?

Am I wrong?

Looks like the FDA should have done something they did not.. and likely heads should roll.

Read it again.

Maybe, but most farms sell through socialist co-ops, so you don't have the vertical integration necessary to make that an effective marketing campaign. The buyer doesn't even know who the farmer is.
1. "Most" are not "all".
2. If a huge farm were smart they'd brand their product and sell it as "safer", people would pay slightly more, and you can increase profit margin massively. Even if they wouldn't pay slightly more for safer eggs (they would), you wouldn't lose much and would sell more if you advertised how much safer your eggs were, especially now.

You know a lot more than all the huge farms.

Wouldn't lose much? talk like that will get you demoted to dirt slave.

Egg sellers are often not PR specialists. And higher profit margins when, not if, some eggs were sold with salmonella would be a major boon.

First, people buy eggs that are "infused" with Omega 3 at a higher price (the farm feeds them a slightly different feed), branded and sold as such at a higher price, they have a much higher profit margin than the farms that are stuck in co-op mode. Second, "safer" eggs would sell like wildfire right now, they'd have owned the industry. Relying on "what everybody does" is exactly why socialist "co-op" idiocy failed in this circumstance. A forward thinking and innovative company could be making the bank and owning their competitors after this.

I've never had a problem eating cooked but runny eggs either but I like 'em cooked through better. Plus the plate are easier to clean. Raw egg white used to be the main ingredient in some paints because once a raw egg dies on something its more or less permanent. You can't put a plate in the dishwasher and turn the machine on hours later and expect the stuff to come off with mere detergent, bleach and hot water.

I wash my plates by hand right after eating before they go into the dishwasher. I learned that very early in life.

You libertarians force us to mock you.
