School Closures Due To COVID Outbreaks

I'm sitting in an empty classroom right now. My two classes of younger students aren't learning anything this week due to having to resort to "distance" learning. I'm just trying to keep them caught up so that they don't lose what we've learned in the first 4 weeks this year. My older students in the advanced math class will be fine as they will be able to do the work after watching the Youtube videos I created for them. We have missed three days this week and hopefully we will be back in person on Monday.

We have three COVID cases in our elementary staff. We had to shut down because we don't have enough staff and substitues (drug tests, you know) to cover their classes. If we did we'd still be teaching in person.

I don't know what the end game is going to be with this COVID pandemic but I know that if we continue NOT to have kids in the classroom in person we are going to be in a real educational bind. We are in one already. Speaking only for my field, our kids are woefully behind in Mathematics. When I get them I do my best to get them caught up but have only been able to get them "on level" in about 5 of my 34 years. One can only do so much. You have to take them from where they are and get them as far as you can. "Them" ... the majority of the class, not just the elite/smart kids. It isn't going to happen with public school "distance learning" any more than it is going to happen with the likes of Epic and other online charter schools.

This covers way too much material to try to list them all in the OP, so let's just post the examples as they come in.

Enjoy the discussion; and remember: We're all on the same side, and we have lots in common.

-All humans are on the same side in the war on COVID.

-We all love our kids and want them to be healthy and safe.

-We all want out kids to grow up and have it at least as good as we do.

-We all want America to be a great place for our kids to enjoy when they grow up.

-We all understand our kids need a good education.

-None of us like it that we are stricken with a pandemic.

-We all want to have our normal non-pandemic lives back.

-None of us like to see our friends, neighbors and relatives being stricken with this disease, struggling with COVID, or dying of it.

-We would all like to have it just gone.

-We all want America to enjoy as much freedom as possible while still being a civil society.

-We all love America and none of us are trying to destroy our own home country.

Now. Let's talk about those schools having to close because of COVID outbreaks.

Translation: Masks, vaccinations and social distancing are NOT enough for the lunatic left. They desire permanent shut downs over a virus that is far from deadly and where there are treatments to prevent the need for hospitalization and ventilation. :palm:

What would the snow plow man equivalent be?

Schools are no longer scheduling snow days. That confused me at first. If there is too much snow to go to school, students will now go to school online. It is a different world.

This utter madness is going to cause a big shift towards ‘alternative’ education for many parents of school kids. And that’s not even getting into CRT and the gender crap indoctrination. Unfortunately, it’s going to come at a huge cost to public schools AND to kids more generally. Some of them are never going to catch back up after this and it’s going to affect them the rest of their lives.

Thanks for describing what you're seeing.

It didn't have to be this way.

I blame Trump for much of this, with a large helping of Tucker Carlson thrown in.

The pandemic never needed to get this bad.

It should never have become political. Republicans have a very bad habit of making things political which never should have been. The Climate Crisis comes immediately to mind.

If everyone had recognized the potential devastation to our society, and joined in the efforts to do whatever we needed to do to fight the pandemic, together, we would not be in such a dire situation right now.

We are in that dire situation, so we must take measures to deal with it.

We cannot ignore our way out of this.

It will not just 'miraculously go away.'

A united approach to fighting the pandemic would have been best.

A well concerted and coordinated effort in which all humans act in common interest to wipe out the pandemic would be completely effective.

Because we do not have that, because it has been made political, because people got selfish when they needed to be thinking of the greater common good, that is why it has gotten so bad.
