Yes, they ARE being denied something (or were). They could not marry the person they loved. Our gov't has no need to regulate personal relationships for people. (other than age limits and consent)

If someone enters a civil union, and someone asks if they are married, should they say "No, we are civilly unioned?

Yes, it is a marriage. And FYI, marriage is not necessarily a religious institution.

Having children is not limited to married couples.

And many same sex couples procreate. They have to involve another person (or at least some of their cells). But when straights couples do the same, you somehow feel it is blessed.

No, it is not about procreation. Nothing in the typical marriage vows mentions children. There are plenty of married couples without children. Should they be forced to divorce?
