Should churches, synagogues & mosques etc. be taxed?

That's capital gains tax.

It is also unearned income tax (interest income on savings). You asked how income tax is antagonistic to savings. I believe the idea is that if a person saves or invests what little disposable income they have it is further taxed by adding it to their income.

The thing many seem to be unaware of, or choose to ignore, is that not all 501(c)(3) organizations even fall into the charitable category, but rather the "community benefit" category. If we were to end tax exemptions for churches, we'd have to end tax exemptions for all organizations. If we were to keep tax exemptions, but only for "charitable work", we'd still end up taxing organizations like Green Peace., National Audubon Society, Duck Unlimited, etc.

It's an asinine proposition. Of course, since it will never even make it TO committee, there is no worries. The only thing disturbing is how the "freedom loving" modern liberal is all about freedom - except those things they disagree with, and then its absolutely OK to use government to quash it as much as possible.

get rid of the not for profit and religious tax exemptions

Great. Many not-for-profits are barely making it as it is, especially in this unstable and stagnant economy, and your answer to the economy is tax our not-for-profits. Hint: these organizations, as a whole, do our society FAR more good than any taxes you want them to pay would end up doing. Taxing ANY community benefit organization is beyond asinine.

But, thankfully, most people (like the 3 year old down the street) have more intelligence than those who actually advocate such a ridiculously submoronic idea.

so your response is to insult me - your argument sucks and you are hereby awarded the turpentine soaked corn cob award - up your ass

Tax on religious institutions, is a defacto tax on the 1st Amendment. Congress shall make NO LAW prohibiting the free exercise of religion. The exercise is no longer "free" once it is taxed. It would be the equivalent of saying you must pay a tax in order to cast a vote.

I certainly hope, if and when this idea does come up, it is proposed by a Democrat, so the Republicans can reap the huge political rewards for the stupidity.

Did anyone ever find out where it says that churches can't advocate in politics? Or is that just more irrational groupthink, like "globalization is inevitable"?

Why should churches be prohibited from advocating in politics, any more than any other group of individuals? Now you seem to want to stifle free speech rights as well as freedom of religion. I think we need to do more than reject you people, I think we should run you out of our country, because you obviously just don't get it. We need to repatriate you fuckwits to some far away place, where you can implement your stupidity and watch it crash and burn. Then we could, once a year or so, deport the stupid and rescue 'refugees' who had come to understand and appreciate America for what it is. In the meantime, every time some mouth-breather suggested taxing religion or stifling free speech, we could point to the fucked up mess you idiots had formed as an example of why it was stupid.

So your contention is that the use of the word "free" in the First Amendment involves money?

I can't seem to locate any source that supports that interpretation.

Can you supply it?

Earlier in the thread people were conjecturing that in return for their tax exempt status churches were obliged somehow to stay out of politics. Seems ridiculous to me. Politics is where morality and policy are the rubber meeting the road.

Why wouldn't it include money? Is there any sort of logic to that?

So your position is that the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment to the Consitutution of the United States forbids the taxation of religious organizations?
