They were writing the U. S. Constitution in 1784??
They didn't call for a constitutional convention until 1786 and it was not to write a new constitution but to simply revise the Articles of Confederation.

By the time the rest of the Virginia delegation arrived, most of the Pennsylvania delegation had arrived as well. They agreed on Madison's plan, and formed what came to be the predominant coalition. By the time the Convention started, the only blueprints that had been assembled were Madison's Virginia Plan, and Charles Pinckney's plan. As Pinckney did not have a coalition behind his plan, Madison's plan was the starting point for deliberations."

We democratically elect our representatives. That does not make us a Democracy. We are ruled by a Constitution. That is what a Republic is. We have several layers of Republics (local/state/federal). That is what Federated is. We are a Federated Republic, not a Democracy.

No, a republic is rule by law. A Constitution rules over the country, not any dictator/oligarchy/etc...
Plenty of countries call themselves Republics even though they aren't.
