I think Trump believes he can tell his base one thing one day and then switch and say the exact opposite the next, and they will not only accept it but deny he said the prior thing. He knew he needed a certain profile of supporter who would buy his lies and BS without critical thought.

based on Trump prior, trying to get Mark Esper to 'shoot protestors in the legs' an being denied and seeing that in this term he has seemingly been intent on showing he will do everything he was denied on last term, i do think a situation like this with the military in DC will not be out of the question, if the military is on route and confronted by protesters.
It might not be tanks and may just be everyday military vehicles or soldiers told to run protesters down or shoot them to clear the way.

I think you nailed it there. But it might be an order to 'do not stop and run over anyone who does not move out of the road way' since Florida has already normalized that law as ok.
Plus i am sure all who are serving Trump this term will get a pre-emptive pardon as his term ends, as he has the immunity from prosecution but they do not. And i think they all know that.

Most are being filmed in parks and others areas picking up garbage around the city as there are not being sent in to the most dangerous parts of the city where they might actually be confronted by crime.
It is all theater.
This is due to Doge cuts which knocked the cities workers who would pick up garbage around parks and other areas for a few dozen from a few hundred prior. Of course @Damocles would tout that as Doge Savings while not considering the greater cost of using National Guard now nor the 'broken windows' philosophy that says keeping a city cleaner and more orderly results in less crime.
