Sonia Sotomayor Should Retire Now

I am still so intrigued by this response.

A Democratic journalist wrote in the Atlantic, not Rawstory or a right-wing equivalent like Breibart but a respected left leaning publication that based on what happened with Justice Ginsburg he thinks at age 70 and showing signs of health issues that the correct play for Democrats to maintain the seat is for her to step down and be replaced - because it's not fait accompli that Biden will win in November.

One can certainly argue they don't think Sotomeyer should step down and that the author is wrong here. But your response is Thomas never asked a question for a decade and was never qualified for the job? Like how do you even come with that as a response? It's almost fascinating.

For years I've read articles like this about Thomas that informed my opinion. Also I think he was on the wrong side of some extremely important cases.

"Neither Chief Justice William Rehnquist, who presided over Thomas’s first fourteen years on the Court, nor Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., who has run the court for the past eleven, ever assigned Thomas a landmark opinion for the Court. Thomas’s admirers cite such opinions as Good News Club v. Milford Central School, in 2001, which found that a public school had to allow a religious group to meet on campus after hours. That was indeed a conservative victory, but hardly comparable in magnitude to others handed down during his tenure. The truth is that Rehnquist and Roberts never trusted Thomas to write an opinion in a big case that could command a majority of even his conservative colleagues.

Why was this? It is because Thomas is not a conservative but, rather, a radical—one whose entire career on the Court has been devoted to undermining the rules of precedent in favor of his own idiosyncratic interpretation of the Constitution."

He's also taking bribes and his wife is a Trump Traitor. She should go to prison if convicted of assisting in setting up 1/6.

Thomas sat on the Supreme Court in countless trials and NEVER asked a question for decades. We know his ethics are non-existent. He was never qualified to do the job and he has been bad. He is the worst judge in history and is doing serious damage to the court.
Funny you guys picked out the Dems and women. You do not know who you are and why you think as badly as you do. You never will.

You sound a bit racist.

Ok, but that has nothing to do with the article in the Atlantic posted in the OP. I'm not a Democrat but I've don't recall any other Democrats making the argument the author of the article is making (that Sotomayor should step down so Biden can name her replacement before the election and Democrats are guaranteed to keep the seat). But I understand the concept behind it in terms of raw politics.

Not that any Democrats are required to give their opinion but not a single one has offered one and instead started talking about Thomas, like Republicans would want him to step down so Biden could replace him? Not really realistic there.

I think he's trying to make a racist play on names with Kunta Kinte hence the misspelling of her name, Ketanji Brown Jackson or Justice Jackson.

Three of them said "Kenji." However I'm on the fence about whether it's a racist play on names or if they're really just dumb.

I can't speak specifically for the intentions of that poster but there's a reason people here, and elsewhere, misspell names all the times - it's a sign of disrespect.

Takes me back to the Dale Carnegie 'How To Win Friends And Influence People' class I took right after college. He wrote "the most important name in the English to anyone is their name". Think about it, how we feel when someone we barely know remembers our name? There's a reason great politicians (or politicians that reach great heights) often have an incredible ability to remember names.

The flip side of that is by misspelling or purposefully mispronouncing a name is how we attempt to insult someone or show disrespect. Even on this board pay attention to how often people do it. If you haven't noticed it will amaze you when you start looking for it. And not just individual names but how people spell liberal or conservative or Democrat or Republican etc. It's a way to show disrespect.

I could only read two paragraphs of the article because the rest was behind a paywall. But I do recall repubs and Dems saying that RBG should step down because of her age and serious health problems, dating back to when Obama was president.

I imagine if Sotomayor stepped down today and Biden named a replacement, the repubs in Congress would pull the same thing McConnell did and say they should wait until after the election.

They're like the three dumbest students in a class all copying off each other. That said, yes, they are racist and misogynist as proved by their other posts on related subjects and the fact they only go after the women of color on SCOTUS.

Exactly. A reason to never trust the Republicans again.

Democrats control the Senate, Republicans couldn't stop them. The author is a Democrat. He's arguing from a Democratic perspective. IF she stepped down Democrats would have the power to appoint her replacement. It's raw politics. That's what he's arguing for.

Yeah, I understand about the disrespect. I do it myself by never capitalizing trump's name. But I think those people never heard a name like "Ketanji" before and they don't know how to spell or pronounce it.

It's possible. I misspell and mispronounce names not on purpose. I try not but it does happen unfortunately.

A common Trump move, especially against women. Remember all the comments Trump made about the wives of opponents? Rosie O'Donnell?

While name-calling is common on the Internet among common citizens, we should expect better out of our elected and appointed leaders who, literally, have the power of life and death over many Americans through their actions.
