That's because you're stupid. Allow me to explain...

Say we ignore all the corruption and fraud and malfeasance in the system and assume everyone is honest and upfront in their dealings like the system intends. Now we all already know this is fantasy just with these parameters, so that should indicate the flaws right there, but let's continue with this anyways...

You vote for a representative and they fail to get elected. Right off the bat you're now irrelevant because you're not a voice in the policy and aims of the person you voted against. So you're little more than a tax sow to be milked. Guess you should have voted harder.

But even if you 'win', you don't have any say really because you voted with other people for the same representative but for varying and sometimes completely different reasons and goals. So who is the representative supposed to represent? Why they'll have to compromise with all their constituents and end up fucking them all to some degree. But further, they'll have to work with representatives who are wholly opposed to them on every level. So all the representatives have to compromise with each other, leaving the people you voted for actively working against you and what you voted for at times. So you still get fucked. All the more so because there is no way to change the outcome and have no way to punish those transgressions because the system is inherently designed for them to transgress.

Democracy was a concept for city states, not nation states. You can't put a dogs heart in a elephant and expect it to work well, nor should you expect systems of government, even when working perfectly, to be ideal for conditions they weren't designed for.
