Study: Lesbian Mothers NEVER Abuse Their Children

I, too, know of a case personally. Young woman put in the hospital by her mother and her mother's lesbian lover because she came home earlier than expected and accidentally caught the two in the living room.

Clearly the referenced study is a text book example of biased sampling to reach a preconceived conclusion. One more support of the old saying "there are liars, damned liars, and statisticians".

There are idiots, huge idiots, and good luck.

This was a headline in today's SF Chronicle. When I see the word 'never' that little b.s. detector in my head will often go off. It turns out this was a GLBT backed study that interview 78 kids. 78. Does a study like this do anything to advance the cause?

I have a gay Aunt and I love her and her partner dearly but they are both human. And humans f up (sometimes really badly) and unfortunately that seems to include beating kids. Are lesbians somehow immune from this? I have a hard time believing that.

Study: Lesbian mothers never abuse their children

New findings from a longterm study reveal that kids of lesbian moms are never abused and are more likely to identify as bisexual.

Researchers working on the longest-running study of American lesbian mothers and their children have have found that lesbian mothers physically or sexually abuse their children never, zero percent to be precise.

In contrast, 26 of American teens as a whole report physical abuse by a parent or caregiver, and 8.3 percent sexual abuse.

This might not seem entirely surprising when you consider that women in general are less likely to abuse children and lesbian mothers have to put a lot of planning, time, thought, and money into having a child.

The study authors said: "The absence of child abuse in lesbian mother families is particularly noteworthy, because victimization of children is pervasive and its consequences can be devastating. To the extent that our findings are replicated by other researchers, these reports from adolescents with lesbian mothers have implications for healthcare professionals, policymakers, social service agencies, and child protection experts who seek family models in which violence does not occur."

Of course you have to keep in mind that the sample size was small. Researchers interviewed only 78 children. They asked the 17-year-old sons and daughters of lesbian mothers about their sexual abuse, sexual orientation, and sexual behavior.

In terms of sexual orientation, 2.8 percent of the kids considered themselves predominantly to exclusively homosexual.

Jezebel reports:

The study did find that daughters of lesbian parents were more likely to report same-sex contact, and more likely to identify as bisexual, than the general population. This could just mean that daughters of lesbian moms were more open about their sexuality and less likely to keep their behavior or identification under wraps. But surely homophobes will point to the data as evidence that lesbian moms turn girls gay. Those girls might then grow up to become lesbian moms themselves, thus perpetuating a vicious cycle in which children are repeatedly not abused. Clearly it's time to panic.

The U.S. National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study (NLLFS) is in its 24th year at the the Williams Institute, a research center on sexual orientation law and public policy at UCLA School of Law.

Perhaps the underlying message is sexually fulfilled people tend to have a nicer disposition. :D

Where in this study did they have the word NEVER??????????

Why the fuck do you have to lie?

The only way a study could conclusively say lesbians "never" do something is to talk to every lesbian.

Otherwise its bullshit. I believe, as a group, lesbians have a lower rate of abuse. It might even be rare for them.

But "never" is bullshit.

I don't see why nobody is taking in what WM is saying here.

The study in question states only that zero percent of the children involved in the study itself had been victims of abuse by their parents/guardians.

That has then been extrapolated by the author of the piece to indicate that lesbian parents never abuse their children.

This sort of stuff goes on all the time as journalists seek an easy headline to create interest. I would have thought people would have cottoned on to this by now.

Where in the article does it claim that lesbians NEVER abuse children?
Ummm....the title of said article. Just like Old Man and The Sea mentions both old men and the sea. It's in the title.

Now it isn't the result of the study (though the study obviously does suggest towards it), but that's not what the study actually says. It IS what the title of the article says though.

FTA:
Researchers working on the longest-running study of American lesbian families asked children of lesbian mothers if they had ever been physically or sexually abused by a parent and the answer was never in all cases.

I like this comme nt on the site:

ellisdean:
Consider the source of the study (U.S. National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study) and then consider the results. While I don't doubt that abuse rates in lesbian couples are vastly lower than, say, lower class hetero society, I would certainly call into question the objectivity of the results.

What do gay males think about this? Do they care that they are curiously left out of the study, and with these results one could say "gay male couples have a significantly higher rate of abuse in their families than lesbain couples"? Because even if the rate was 2%, that's significantly higher than zero, no?

And finally, (and this is more a rhetorical statement than anything else) I don't know why SFGate prints results from such a clearly biased study. It's like printing a study from the Karl Rove institute saying that research has shown that Bush43 was the best president ever.

LOL

First off Desh, you ignorant slut, all your swearing made DQ leave the board.

Second of all you posted the exact same article I did. The heading on the sfgate website said Lesbians NEVER abuse their children. I took it right off the their own heading. So FUCK YOU and FUCK YOU too Froggie for thanking her on this post and thinking I made this up and lie'd.

And stupid ass Desh they had the article all day yesterday on the website with the word NEVER in the headline if your dumb ass would have gone and looked.

Do you think they changed the title in response to criticism of using the word "never"? It definitely said "NEVER" yesterday.

They usually only have their articles up for a day at a time so it's down right now. Like you said there were a lot of complaints in the comment section of the article about the headline using the word NEVER because in the article they just say zero percent. When I orginally posted it (being slow as I normally am) I didn't catch at first that the 'sensational' headline came from sfgate.com and not the writers of the study.
