Surprise! Massachusetts pushes for spanking ban

Jose Padilla?

I'm not changing the subject. I'm merely responding to Dano's claim that liberalism is far more scary than anything that conservatives can come up with. I simply disagree with his statement for obvious reasons.

Padilla was charged and convicted. Yes, he was held as an illegal enemy combatant and that should not have happened. But it was rectified. Any others? Rendition? Torture? Etc...??? Or were your assertations all based on the case of Padilla?

You should read before you type. First post:

"This is why I consider Liberalism far more scary than anything Conservatives could ever come up with"

You are correct. I thought you were responding to Chap. I tend to glaze over Danos comments and should not have done so. My bad on that.

No problem-o. That's more what I took issue with on this thread. It's like Dano's repeated contentions that Iraq spending isn't as much of a concern, because at least wars end.

I'm really not a big fan of this kind of legislation, but I'll be surprised if it really passes, even in MA.

Well, I guess that was my mistake for the year. Almost went the whole year without one.

Side note... an election year is not a good year for anyone in your party to be handing ammo to the Reps. :)

no this is definitely the kind of shit that caused this state to elect republican governors.. the state house is filled with ultra liberals. needed counter balance.. unfortunately the Iraq war.. something of witch a republican governor of Massachusetts would have nothing to do with was part of reason we now have a full left government in the state... this is the sort of shit we will see more and more of.. the leftists coming out to take advantage of uncontested government.

The Padilla case was not rectified. It was papered over. The government still claims the authority to detain US citizens if they are deemed illegal enemy combatants. The government still retains the ability to perform rendition. The government still retains the ability to perform "enhanced interrogation techniques" f.k.a. torture. The government still retains the ability to perform warrantless wiretapping. The government still conducts legal proceedings with evidence obtained from torture and the punishment could be death. The government still conducts legal proceedings where defendants are not provided the evidence used against them.

The Padilla case was rectified. He was tried and convicted. The issues surrounding it may not have been. (just for clarification purposes)

1) Yes the government can declare US Citizens illegal combatants. But my understanding is that they are still entitled to due process as a result of the Padilla case. Not positive on this point, so I will have to check when I have more time.

2) yes, rendition is still available for use. But to my knowledge this has not been done to any US citizen as you stated.

3) Yes, warrantless wiretapping is now allowed and legal.

4) Yes, they do against illegal enemy combatants who are NOT US citizens. They are not entitled to our court systems. They are entitled to simply shoot them under the Geneva conventions rather than detain them... would you prefer this?

Edited because I missed one....

5) please cite a case where the evidence was obtained by torture. Please make sure to include what torture method was performed.

How do you expect me to cite to secret proceedings? The whole point of the enemy combatant status is to keep people out of the standard criminal justice system where coerced evidence is inadmissible in court and to keep the proceedings secret.

Not surprising at all..........

If Ted Kennedy et al of the Kennedy's had been spanked as children...they would be reasonable people..the tradition in Mass...continues...'spare the rod spoil the child'!

i take it a lot of republicans beat their kids... but in defense, i got a few wooden spoons cracked on me, got the belt, i personally think the worst out of any of them was getting my mouth washed out w/ soap, or when my mom tied me to a tree next to a beesnest with honey all over my body naked.

the problem with corprol punishment is that there is a lot of grey area's where does it go from reprimanding to child abuse?

lol

Charge the parents with abuse and neglect? What a crazy pack of extremists. It's small comfort to me that after Britain passed a ban and all the Liberals on here who said "it would never happen here" are wrong yet again.
Great Liberals, send the police to people's homes, take the parents from the children and lock them up for their punishment. I'm sure they'll see much less "abuse" and "neglect" in a group home.

"Lawmakers on Beacon Hill are set to consider a proposed ban on spanking children in the commonwealth.

NewsCenter 5's Shiba Russell reported that the issue is set for debate at a Statehouse hearing Wednesday morning.

The Boston Herald reported that State Rep. Jay Kaufman filed the spanking ban petition at the request of an Arlington, Mass., nurse who wants Massachusetts to become the first state in the country to stop corporal punishment.
If this proposal does become law and parents are caught hitting their children who are under the age of 18 they could be charged with abuse or neglect. "

This is why I consider Liberalism far more scary than anything Conservatives could ever come up with.

ZOMG?@?!

A random lawmaker submitted a BILL?!!?!? Certainly the spanking ban is just minutes away!!!!!! And certainly this represents all liberals, because all bills get passed?!/1?1

this is the sort of shit that drives even keeled independents and moderates away from democrats.

its nobody's business how a parent raises a child. while i dont use spanking but all for the most serious offenses like when he ran into a road and when he somehow managed to get to eh pairing knives.. it should most definitely not be a crime.

Yeah, it is our business if your "raising" includes beating the child, and abusing him through refusing vaccinations.

Now please, tell me where he stated it was worse? Or that he was ok with any of your comments?

This is why I consider Liberalism far more scary than anything Conservatives could ever come up with.

Too many of you are of the opinion that if something isn't as bad as the cluster f**k in Iraq that it is justifiable.

This bill is wrong and you know it. The government has NO PLACE deciding how a parent should discipline their kid.

Dano is making the argument that the cluster fuck in Iraq or violations in the war on terror are not as bad as this and are therefore justifiable or tolerable.

Why is boxing not battery then? Or what about kids fighting each other?
You have rules within society, this goes way too far and the government should not have a role in disciplining children. I think they've proved themselves well enough in becoming the father in Liberal Democrat run inner cities on how well kids turn out when they have no discipline.

I'd like to, but again, when I posted this in Britain, you guys said it would never happen here. When I posted this about a congresslady in Cali, you guys said it was just one kook. Now we see it happening in Mass and you want us all to pretend that it isn't coming elsewhere? That we can count on the rest of the Liberals and Democrats to stop it?
Dream on.

It's still just one cook Dano. Duh.

How HARD do you have to search the internet for this irrelevant shit, Dano?

well from a parent perspective of a very independent thinking 3.5yo boy.. their needs to be a difference in the way i discipline him for.. not behaving at the dinner table... time out.. to running into the street.. spanking

i should not be committing a crime in doing this.

Yeah. Kids that are spanked turn out to be worse adults.

Massachusettes is just the only state in the union that isn't filled full of liberal pussies who let the conservatives steamroll over them at every step of the way.

I understand the desire to keep the state out of how you raise your kid and maybe someone can give me a good reason for the distinction, but why is it ok to do something to a child under the age of 18 that would be considered battery if done to anyone over 18.

I don't necessarily support this legislation, but I understand where the guy is coming form. Further, until I see some evidence that other people support this bill I'd shy away from castigating the entire democratic party.

Why is it okay to falsely imprison someone under 18, i.e., make them go to their room?
