Suspending Reality

I will continue to use the term militant atheist for anyone claiming knowledge that the majority of religious people are morons, simpletons, deluded fools.

I will mercilessly use the term holy roller for anyone who cites the bible as an inerrant source of literal truth and gives off a whiff of Christian nationalism.

And you will still be Sybil, the Sock.

Agreed. One thing that keeps me from claiming I know that the material physical reality we can percieve is everything there is, is the feeling that we have not achieved that kind of omniscience and the suspicion that our souped up chimpanzee brains might not be up to the task of understanding everything, in the way that an aardvark cannot comprehend the Pythagorean theorem.

The Theory of Evolution is a religion, Sybil.

Do you have a Bible in your shopping cart, son?

https://www.britannica.com/topic/agnosticism
Agnosticism, (from Greek agnōstos, “unknowable”), strictly speaking, the doctrine that humans cannot know of the existence of anything beyond the phenomena of their experience.

No need, Sybil. I already have one. I am not your son. You are still hallucinating.

The Britannica does not define any word, Sybil. False authority fallacy.

Agnostic means 'without god'. 'Gnostic' means god. The a- prefix means 'no' or 'without'.

So it becomes deeply embedded and seldom really "questioned".
In the case of Global Warming, adults let this happen to themselves. It's like they never had any critical reasoning skills.

It must be kind of scary to be faced with the existence of people who do not have similar beliefs since they "feel" so common to the believer. And, besides, there are always going to be "big questions" that can't be answered by direct observation so there's always going to be a place for the beliefs to exist. They bring comfort and a sense of understanding of how things work (even if they may be mistaken)
Except in the case of Global Warming, the faith does not bring comfort, it brings fear and panic, even when shown to be mistaken.

Since so many things are beyond our direct control or understanding, there's a need within people to create "just so" stories that make sense of the world around them. Even atheists do this. No one is immune.
How do atheists do this?

The part I find frustrating is that even if you approach the believer without being nasty or snarky the believer sometimes gets super-defensive and will cut off the conversation.
Especially Climate Change worshipers. If you politely ask a Climate lemming "Why should a rational adult believe in your religion?" he will point to his clergy and tell you that they explain it so much better and will squirm to change the subject.

Again, I kind of understand (no one likes their beliefs questioned at the fundamental level), but it also makes me wonder how little warmizombies have thought about their own faith.

It was through thinking about my own faith that led me to atheism,
I thought you believed in Global Warming? You can't be an atheist and profoundly religious at the same time.

Gnostic (gnosis) means "knowledge". Agnostic is "without knowledge". Just a point of clarification.
Agnosticism is a position that the supernatural is unknowable, i.e. the supernatural is what comes without knowledge. It does not mean that one simply doesn't know something. If I forget my password, I don't suddenly become agnostic about my password. Just a point of clarification.

Into the Night = IBDaMann = gfm7175. I call him Sybil for short since he truly believes all three accounts are different people. Although I'm not positive because he keeps running from query, I think there's a solid chance that he's also Uncensored2008.

IMO, Sybil truly is a paranoid schizophrenic. His behavior fits that pattern.

Symptoms of Schizophrenia
People with schizophrenia experience different symptoms, but here are some common signs to recognize:

  • Hallucinations
  • Delusions, such as feeling like you are being watched or followed when you are not
  • Confused thinking
  • Changes in feelings and behaviors
  • Difficulty feeling and expressing positive emotions
  • Reduced range of emotional expression, such as limited facial expressions or eye contact
  • Difficulty getting out of the house, doing things with other people, or pursuing goals such as going to work, attending school, or maintaining relationships
  • Trouble concentrating or paying attention, memory loss, or slow thinking

Symptoms
Schizophrenia involves a range of problems with thinking (cognition), behavior and emotions. Signs and symptoms may vary, but usually involve delusions, hallucinations or disorganized speech, and reflect an impaired ability to function. Symptoms may include:

  • Delusions. These are false beliefs that are not based in reality. For example, you think that you're being harmed or harassed; certain gestures or comments are directed at you; you have exceptional ability or fame; another person is in love with you; or a major catastrophe is about to occur. Delusions occur in most people with schizophrenia.
  • Hallucinations. These usually involve seeing or hearing things that don't exist. Yet for the person with schizophrenia, they have the full force and impact of a normal experience. Hallucinations can be in any of the senses, but hearing voices is the most common hallucination.
  • Disorganized thinking (speech). Disorganized thinking is inferred from disorganized speech. Effective communication can be impaired, and answers to questions may be partially or completely unrelated. Rarely, speech may include putting together meaningless words that can't be understood, sometimes known as word salad.
  • Extremely disorganized or abnormal motor behavior. This may show in a number of ways, from childlike silliness to unpredictable agitation. Behavior isn't focused on a goal, so it's hard to do tasks. Behavior can include resistance to instructions, inappropriate or bizarre posture, a complete lack of response, or useless and excessive movement.
  • Negative symptoms. This refers to reduced or lack of ability to function normally. For example, the person may neglect personal hygiene or appear to lack emotion (doesn't make eye contact, doesn't change facial expressions or speaks in a monotone). Also, the person may lose interest in everyday activities, socially withdraw or lack the ability to experience pleasure.

Symptoms can vary in type and severity over time, with periods of worsening and remission of symptoms. Some symptoms may always be present.

In men, schizophrenia symptoms typically start in the early to mid-20s. In women, symptoms typically begin in the late 20s. It's uncommon for children to be diagnosed with schizophrenia and rare for those older than age 45.

Another reason why descriptors are essentially useless in these kinds of discussions. Words mean different things to different people.

Using terms like "theist", "atheist" and/or "agnostic" makes no real sense.

One should describe one's position...as carefully and clearly as possible.

Here is mine, once again:

I do not know if any GOD (or gods) exist or not;

I see no reason to suspect that gods cannot exist…that the existence of a GOD or gods is impossible;

I see no reason to suspect that at least one GOD must exist...that the existence of at least one GOD is needed to explain existence;

I do not see enough unambiguous evidence upon which to base a meaningful guess in either direction on whether any gods exist or not...so I don't.

(When I use the word "GOD or gods" here, I mean "The entity (or entities) responsible for the creation of what we humans call 'the physical universe'...IF SUCH AN ENTITY OR ENTITIES ACTUALLY EXIST.)

Just a point of clarifiction, your alter-ego said it meant without God. Which is incorrect. That's why I wrote what I wrote. You should already know what you posted under the Into the Night persona.

Take it to another thread. Clearly you want to complain about science you don't understand. This is not the place for it, Into the Night.

Yep, everybody who buys into the Global Warming religion gets buyers regret, and it always looks the same. The good news is that there are heavy drugs to help you cope.

Into the Night = IBDaMann = gfm7175.
Three separate people, Sybil.
I call him Sybil for short since he truly believes all three accounts are different people.
Sybil is YOU and YOUR socks, Sybil. You cannot project YOUR problems on anybody else.
Although I'm not positive because he keeps running from query, I think there's a solid chance that he's also Uncensored2008.
Sybil is YOU.
IMO, Sybil truly is a paranoid schizophrenic. His behavior fits that pattern.
Unfortunately, there is no treatment for your condition.

Another reason why descriptors are essentially useless in these kinds of discussions. Words mean different things to different people.
Only because people like you don't understand them.
Using terms like "theist", "atheist" and/or "agnostic" makes no real sense.
They certainly do. Words mean things. Your attempts at redefining them or nullifying them is not going to work.
One should describe one's position...as carefully and clearly as possible.
Your posts have already done so.

Yet, you are religious. You believe in the Church of Global Warming, the Church of the Big Bang, the Church of Hate, and the Church of Karl Marx.
These are your gods.
