Tancredo got out of serving in Vietnam by claiming mental illness

Tom battled depression for nearly a decade before the draft. He was officially diagnosed and took medication for it before he went to college.

How is it that people who think mental illness should be treated more seriously think that it is now just an "excuse".

Thankfully my friend overcame some of those earlier issues he had in his life and became a relatively successful human being.

While I disagree with him on things, he is a decent person who gives an honest account of his life before he was elected. He doesn't flower it with falsity or pretend other than what really happened.
 
why anyone can be pro vietnam is beyond me. that country had nothing to offer. At least with iraq one could say.. a new base for us, oil futures, currency war.

Vietnam = nothing

im against the Iraq war. costs to much money and blood and i get nothing back in return. BUT at least the country is resource rich unlike Vietnam.
 
I have some friends too who have had meNtal issues in their pasts and are now fine human beings.

I would never support them for the position of president.

This mans greatest strikes against him is his support of idiotic America HARMING WARS.

I told yall that within a few years the majority of Americans will be rationalizing the Iraq invasion/occupation in the same way.

same way we rationalized pushing the Mexicans south, British back to American, and native Americans to reservations.


yet we still became the most powerful country in the world.
 
Rape and pillage is OK as long as you get something for it.

Remember in Vietnam we were fighting the Ruskies.

They were going to take over the world.

I wish we would have realised their government was unsustainable instead of getting hundereds of thousands killed for nothing.
 
I don't know enough about the man but I do know that the mental health issues ONLY would have come up AFTER the deferrments ran. There was no reason to question him about mental health issues or test him BEFORE they ran. While the deferrments were in place he never had to present himself to the draft board for examination and induction. When he did, his mental health issues presented and he was excluded. something like 8 in 10 men in the US eligible for service in Vietnam didn't. Tancredo was not the reason for Saigon's fall, US policy was. Tancredo had issues with depression? Then he should not have gone into miliatry service. Unless someone has proof he FAKED it, I am no one to judge.

I'm sure there were a lot of urban black kids, and poor rural whites who were shipped of to vietam in spite of mental health problems. The difference being, their parents didn't have the financial resources to send their kids to shrinks and pay for medication.
