Tancredo got out of serving in Vietnam by claiming mental illness

all things rise and fall.

Umm you left out how slavery made us powerful.

thats right. stealing tribes from africa.

but somehow we are currently evil for trying to build democracy in iraq. Yet before 2003 people loved America even tho we committed genocides and enslaved races.

I'm sure there were a lot of urban black kids, and poor rural whites who were shipped of to vietam in spite of mental health problems. The difference being, their parents didn't have the financial resources to send their kids to shrinks and pay for medication.
Does this mean we should have simply ignored any diagnosed depression issues?

Agreed, but if Tancredo really had mental health problems he shouldn't have been shipped off to Vietnam. It's unfortunate that others didn't have the resources to prevent that but people in Tancredo's shoes had nothing to do with that.

Tom battled depression for nearly a decade before the draft. He was officially diagnosed and took medication for it before he went to college.
How is it that people who think mental illness should be treated more seriously think that it is now just an "excuse".

Thankfully my friend overcame some of those earlier issues he had in his life and became a relatively successful human being.

While I disagree with him on things, he is a decent person who gives an honest account of his life before he was elected. He doesn't flower it with falsity or pretend other than what really happened.

Pfft. like no one else who served was depressed. Give me a break. He's a draft dodger very much like the other chicken hawks that are currently running.

Actually he showed up before the board, they found the diagnosis, he was rejected.

I would agree he was a "dodger" had he done this as a plan. Decided to "fake" depression so that he could get deferred. However, that is not the case.

LadyT he would only be a draft doger if he was a Democrat.

Touche' I forgot that legitimate reasons for dodging the war is only relegated to Republicans.

On another note, do we really want someone who is prone to clinical depression in the whitehouse. I know I sure as he** don't.

I was depressed as hell when I had to go before the board...
They did not let me out though.....
Who diagnosed it and were you taking medication for what was at that time a chronic issue that had lasted nearly a decade beforehand?

Lady we are all adults here, well with the exception of CK, you can say Hell.

Of course it wasn't "the plan". I'm sure he was overlyeager to fight in vietnam by the number of deferments the chickenhawk had.

How likely do you think it is he would win?

When he entered the race I told you exactly what he was doing and why. He has been very successful getting the issue of illegal immigration into the fore. He did what he planned and continues only to make sure it stays there.

Yeah, he started "planning" it at 13 before we had even done anything in Viet Nam. That's because he is psychic and had mind-control powers over his parents and was able to get them to pay money they didn't have for counselling.

I am undecided on this thus far, but am reading the posts here, and Tiana just scored a big point here.

His deferments had run out. When that happened to Cheney he got married to get his fourth deferment and screwed his wife constantly so that he could knock her up and get his fifth one.

Republicans tend to nominate highly unqualified wackjobs to office. Its a concern.

None of which changes the fact that if he, as a Vietnam war cheerleader, wanted to serve, there wouldn't be a list of deferments there before he had to go before the board, now would there?

His deferments were simply normal ones, when they ran out he didn't request another deferment, he was rejected when they found the diagnosis in his medical record.

Yes, there would. He finished college and showed up as he was supposed to. Had he requested another deferment I might agree. But as it is, he was rejected, not deferred.
