Good teaching, in my experience - and a society that doesn't admire rich thieves. The carrot is respect.

To me he fancies a society where intellectuals (which would probably include himself) are at the top of the food chain, not the entrepreneurs and business folk. Hence the term 'rich thieves' for those who are economically successful.

Not knowing this gentleman but having read his posts I would tend to agree. "Rich thieves" is code for "successful people."

That's an excellent point. I have to admit that my love of the field wasn't the only reason why I wanted to study the life sciences. I knew I would probably be able to make a good living too.

Having said that....when I was in college all the chicks were hot for the guys who were liberal art majors. Now if that won't motivate a 14 yo boy I don't know what will! ;)

I mean no guy ever picked up a chick in college by saying "Yea....I'm an accounting major." ;)

Reminds me of what Mort Sahl said was the difference between Democrats and Republicans.

Democrats are people who are embarrased by what they have earned. Where as Republicans are proud of everything they have stolen. :)

I dunno...look at Topper. He doesn't have a job and does nothing all day but smoke blunts and chase his hot wife around the tennis court. Now that's what I call success! :)

Depends. A lot of my automotive friends are very successful and very ethical. You can be ethical and successful. My brother in law is highly ethical,self employed, and makes an assload of money.
