We are actually in the midst of a Trump Totalitarian regime, as Trump's motives at this point are, for want of a better word, sinister. He appears to be using the playbook of Vladimir Putin and Viktor Orban, readying the ground for an election that will have two candidates but only one possible outcome. What we are seeing in Trump's nightly lies and obfuscations and denunciations of Democrats and the media is the beginnings of a Trumpian totalitarianism.
Trump has seized control of the political debate using his nightly virus press conferences, which are more frequent and last longer than his political rallies. He is gaining control over the media in his choices of whose questions he accepts, taking questions from his suck-up outlets and belittling legitimate journalists like NBC, CNN and PBS who are asking the real questions the country needs answers for.
Trump has put himself in the position of parceling out the key resources needed during the virus outbreak, and there is evidence he is rewarding Republican states with more essential supplies and shorting Democratic states. Like the cheap TOTALITARIAN autocrat with a bad hairdo that he is, Trump demands subservience and praise from political leaders around the country in return for equitable treatment by the federal government.
With victims of the virus in the tens of thousands and potentially headed for more than a million, Trump has his hands on one of the key levers of totalitarian rule. You can see it nightly on his face. People talk about Trump's "lack of empathy," but as the bodies pile up, I think what we see in Trump is the delight of a dictator in the making. For every dead body wheeled into the back of a refrigerated truck, Trump sees a hundred frightened voters who can be manipulated into adoration of their fearless leader.
In the Trump era, personal responsibility, fiscal sanity and rule of law have been overtaken by a preference for alienating our allies while embracing terrorists and dictators, attacking the free press and pitting everyday Americans against one another.
When it comes to governing, DICTATOR TRUMP does five things: perform grand gestures, obfuscate and lie, engage in self-praise, stoke fear, and issue threats.
The Trumpian response to COVID-19 has been compared to the Soviet government’s response to the accident at the Chernobyl power plant, in 1986. For once, this comparison is not far-fetched. The people most at risk are not getting necessary, potentially life-saving information; the government bears the responsibility for failing to inform people and for actively suppressing information; there is rumor and fear on the one hand and dangerous oblivion on the other. To be sure, Americans in 2020 have vastly more access to information than did Soviet citizens in 1986. But the Trump Administration shares two key features with the Soviet government: utter disregard for human life, and a monomaniacal focus on pleasing its leader, who wishes only to look good and powerful. These are the features of totalitarian leadership.
