Democratic leaders who were elected (unlike their Republican opponents, who lost):
Speaker of the House: Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)
Nancy Pelosi made history this year, breaking the marble ceiling to become the first woman to serve as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. With Democrats returning to the majority for the first time in 12 years, Speaker Pelosi and her leadership team are addressing the challenging issues facing the American people after years of inaction. Under her leadership, the 110th Congress is working to make America safer, to restore the American Dream and to restore accountability to government. http://www.speaker.gov/
Senate Majority Leader: Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV)
Since Nevadans elected him to the Senate in 1986, Harry Reid has developed a reputation as a consensus builder and a skillful legislator. Even his Republican colleagues praise his reasoned, balanced approach. http://democrats.senate.gov/
ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERS
DNC Chairman: Gov. Tim Kaine
Upon his election as the Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Gov. Tim Kaine declared that Democrats will continue to fight in all 50 states "now and forever." Gov. Kaine, fluent in Spanish from his community service as a missionary in Honduras, believes that every state, every region, every community, and every person matters. http://www.democrats.org/
DGA Chairman: West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin
Governor Joe Manchin was elected Governor of West Virginia in 2004 with over 63 percent of the vote. In addition to being Chairman of the DGA, Gov. Manchin also chairs the Southern Governors' Association. Gov. Manchin previously served in both houses of the state legislature, as well as Secretary of State. http://www.democraticgovernors.org/
DSCC Chairman: Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ)
Bob Menendez grew up the son of immigrants in a tenement building in Union City. A product of New Jersey's public schools and a graduate of the state's universities, he has served as a school board member, a mayor and a state legislator. Since 1992, he has been fighting for New Jersey families in Washington, where he rose to become the third-highest ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives before taking office in the Senate in 2006. http://www.dscc.org/
DCCC Chairman: Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD)
Representative Van Hollen represents Maryland's 8th district after winning election in 2002. Before joining the House of Representatives, the Congressman served four years in Maryland's House of Delegates and eight years in the State Senate. In 2006, Van Hollen headed up the DCCC's "Red to Blue" program as one of their top lieutenants. http://www.dccc.org/
DLCC Chairman: Iowa Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal
Senator Gronstal was elected Iowa Senate Majority Leader by his fellow Democratic Senators after spearheading their efforts to capture 30 seats in the Iowa Senate in 2006. He has been in the Senate since 1985 and was a member of the House from 1983-85. He represents District 50 in the Iowa Senate, which includes Council Bluffs and Carter Lake. http://www.dlcc.org/
