The Pursuit of Happiness

When Jefferson enshrined "the pursuit of happiness" in the Declaration he had more in mind than people then probably realized although the "pursuit" was much discussed and written about in Jefferson's circle and had long been a subject in philosophical texts. Cicero's answer of virtue was a widely agreed upon goal of the pursuit, the question then becoming - what is virtue? Benjamin Franklin made a list of 13 topics for discussion:

1. Temperance
2. Silence
3. Order
4. Resolution.
5. Frugality.
6. Industry.
7. Sincerity.
8. Justice.
9. Moderation.
10. Cleanliness.
11. Tranquility.
12. Chastity.
13. Humility (for Franklin maybe the most challenging of all)

Have no idea where to go with this so won't try. I thought the topic and Franklin's list might be interesting.
I know Franklin and other founders were influenced by the stoics, and this seems like a list of classic stoic virtues focusing on self-improvement.

What seems to be missing are values focused on service to others.

As in:

14. Generosity
15. Compassion

Yeah, this is Franklin's list; don't know off hand how Jefferson felt about it.

So you think Democrats rioting, looting, committing arson, supporting organized crime and illegal aliens is 'service to others'?

You think trying to force people into electric cars they don't want, and wind and solar power they don't want, is 'service to others'?

You think murdering children for convenience (abortion), mutilating children for 'gender choice', and putting them in 'gun free zones' where a mass shooter can kill with impunity is 'service to others'?

You think raising taxes and causing high inflation and implementing oppressive regulations is 'service to others'?

You think your fascism, communism, and slavery that you advocate is 'service to others'?

I've never met an honorable MAGAt. They are all dishonest, traitorous, anti-American and/or simply insane. If the civil war comes, they should all be taken down to the ground.

Since most are weak, cowardly pieces of shit, I expect they will ditch their Trump flags and red hats then go into hiding.

Your lust for killing half of this country is again noted.
Although it's a proven fact you are the biggest coward
on this forum (yep, you'll hide in a police station), you
still scream for the deaths of those who oppose your
immature, perverted and senseless views.
If a civil war were to come, you will be found with your
head firmly hidden between your legs, crying out in fear
and hiding from any unrest like the limp-wristed wimp
that you are.
You cannot legally own a firearm, you couldn't use one if you could.

"Tom Brady has like 6 Super Bowl rings, and yet he is still not happy....what hope have U"
Heard today on my well curated GrapeVine.

Oh, your list in post #1 ended at 13.
Yes, mercy, charity, compassion, empathy, benevolence would encompass service to others.

The question is, does service to others lead to happiness? For somebody like Donald Trump and many others, obviously not.

I think happiness forever eludes Donald Trump.
His want exceeds his grasp, so, yes.

Trump loves money and wants the impossible; to have all the money in the world. Ergo, he'll never attain happiness since he can never have what he desires so much.

The fact he is so thin-skinned and needs to surround himself with sycophants also indicates a problem with his "pursuit of happiness" since, like a heroin addict, he always wants more flattery. He'll be 80 next year, his health is poor and his mind is deteriorating so I strongly doubt he'll find enlightenment before he strokes out, dies of a heart attack or disappears into seclusion due to dementia.

Abstract virtues are form over function. They find a way to justify child rape, slavery, and genocide. Can you list 3 concrete virtues?

Most MAGAts are lonely old geezers who are bitter and want someone to blame for how fucked up their lives have become. They should look in a mirror then take a handful of fentanyl. :)
One reason fascism was so easy to take a foothold was exactly the MAGAt type in the population. Those who felt isolated, left out, left behind. Hannah Arendt called it loneliness. They are easy marks for a cult leader like Trump.

Agreed. The $64 Question is, "Do enough of our population believe that way?"

As stated previously, certain social conditions need to exist for people to give up their rights to a dictator. Europe has a long history of bowing down to Kings. In America, we kicked out a king. Anyone who supports a n in the United States is a domestic enemy of the Constitution.

How should most Americans handle those traitorous, pedophile-supporting, anti-Constitutional people?

IHMO, most people are non-violent. Those who threaten violence are mostly blowhards. 80%? 95%? However, in a population of 330M Americans, how many are willing to defend the freedoms of their children?

How many are willing to stand against an authoritarian nation for the sake of their children?

Enough of our population does to elect him.

The population in early fascist Germany were also non-violent, but they gradually became willing participants.

By a fraction? Sure.

The conditions of 1930s Germany and 2025 USA are widely different. I predict a lot of dead MAGAts if there's violence. Americans need to be ready to take these racist, misogynistic, anti-Constitutional pedophile supporting assholes down.

They are scum. They are evil. They do not deserve to live when it comes to a fight of life and death.
