I suspect that Trump was thinking that he needed to have good relationships with the Congressional R's because of the likely Impeachment, but that was not what was ever going to protect Trump, it was the Congressional R's fear of the citizens who support Trump that kept Trump from being run out of town on a rail.

Trumps big mistake is that he never recalibrated after it became clear that the Senate R's were going to be useless on the Russia lies, Trump still got up every day intending to be a team player.
