[h=2]Three people have reportedly been killed in two horrifying explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.[/h]
There is as yet no explanation as to what caused the two explosions, which are said to have come from a hotel near the finish line while the race was still ongoing.
The number of casualties is as yet not known, but early reports say that at least three have been killed and many more injured in the incident, with eye witnesses saying that runners and fans were seen covered in blood.
Though the race winners had apparently crossed the line and left the area two hours before the explosions, runners were still in action at an event that was the world's first modern marathon and considered the pinnacle of distance running.
The blasts were caught on camera, and the images quickly spread the world via social networking sites.
"I saw two explosions. The first one was beyond the finish line. I heard a loud bang and I saw smoke rising," said the Boston Herald's Chris Cassidy, who was running in the race.
"I kept running and I heard behind me a loud bang. It looked like it was in a trash can or something...There are people who have been hit with debris, people with bloody foreheads.”
Associated Press have reported that there was a loud explosion on the north side of Boylston Street, just before the bridge that marks the finish line, with a second loud explosion coming a few seconds later.
The headquarters of the Boston Marathon have been locked down and security across both Boston and New York has instantly been stepped up following the explosions, according to a Reuters report.
