Firstly, none of the "Republicans supposedly engaging in these "preliminary discussions" are named, and only anonymous sources are cited.
Secondly, the notoriously-partisan WaPo hack (Jacob Bogage, Jeff Stein, Dan Diamond), state categorically that these unconfirmed "preliminary discussions" are allegedly being held by unnamed "Republicans" "to offset the enormous cost of extending Trump’s 2017 tax cuts".
Problem is, the 2017 Trump tax cuts are set to expire by the end of 2025 anyway.
Another issue with this tale is that the GOP mandate does not mention "offsetting" costs in this manner; it sprciscall targets cutting wasteful and fraudulent government spending by trimming or eliminating bloated bureaucracies and unnecessary regulations.

Umm.. Because the tax cuts are set to expire is the reason they want to extend them.
Here let me explain to you. If you are given an allowance by your dad every month until November then after November you won't get an allowance. If you want to continue to get an allowance you need to get your dad to extend the time period when you will get an allowance.
Another explanation - Your mom, Mrs Trump Administration, has said you can live in her basement until the end of November then you have to move out. You haven't bothered to find a job or look for another place to stay. In order for you to stay in your mom's basement, you need her to extend the deadline of when you move out until next year.
Clearly you don't know what food assistance is.
The government acts like your mom, they provide food to people so they don't starve. Removing food assistance would be like your mom refusing to make you grilled cheese or letting you raid her refrigerator. You would quickly start to lose weight and no longer weigh over 300lbs. Eventually, you would end up in the hospital from lack of food.
