At the time, the brown shirts (flight deck crew that moves and secures planes) were moving the plane onto an elevator to take it to the flight deck. The plane, along with its tractor, rolled off the elevator, with the crew abandoning the tractor and getting clear of the plane to not fall overboard with it.
The second event was a plane that was a 'bolter' due to a failed arrestor cable. The plane had slowed below its stall speed and couldn't get enough speed back up to make a go-around and try again to land. The result was the crew ejected as the plane was going to crash having run off the angle.
These situations are primarily caused when there aren't sufficient crew for good watch rotations and those in the crew have little experience--eg., high turnover with low reenlistment. The Navy in good part brought this on themselves over the last two decades. The other problem is a combination of the Navy and Congress not funding things that would increase personal retention and the recruitment of higher quality crew.

For example, after each trap (landing), the flight deck crew is supposed to inspect the arresting cable that hooked the plane. If it appears worn or damaged, it gets changed and the landing cycle is either interrupted while that happens or the cable is taken out and planes land on the other three. I don't know the specifics of what caused the cable to snap, but it does happen sometimes. This time it slowed the plane below its ability to bolt and go around leading to its loss.
The plane on going on the elevator to the flight deck was another fluke. The handling crew (brown shirts) were moving it. There'd be a tractor driver, a person in charge of the movement, and 3 or 4 "chock and chain" crew to secure the plane as it moved. The ship had to do a radical maneuver with lots of roll and the plane was caught moving onto the elevator in an unsecured (not chocked and chained) condition. That isn't the handler's fault. It was simply a confluence of events that caused the loss. Each plane has a specific "plane captain" and crew that moves it for the squadron involved.
