It is a necessary illusion, but we dont live a second without remembering that it is an illusion.
The ego is the ultimate Tricky Fucker....learning this is one of the first things that happens in Zen training.
BTW: The entire point of humility is to remind people, by the force of the collective if need be, that the Ego is a Tricky Fucker and that we need to stay open to seeing its tricks and remain open to seeing when we are wrong and remain open to learning new things. Its goal was originally good but it has become harmful as we have forgotten what it is for and misapplied it. Also, because learning what a Tricky Fucker the Ego is is a core part of early Zen training humility is completely useless to me....I talk about True/Not True...I organize my brain by True/Not True......anyone who has a problem with that is free to demonstrate where I am wrong....That I not only pay attention to but welcome. My operating system is constantly looking for evidence that I am wrong, when enough accumulates that is cause for a new investigation and a rethink.
