What Americans, whether Democrat or Republican supporters, fail to understand is what exactly U.S. politicians mean when they say they "hope China becomes more democratic." What does that really mean? Is it that these American politicians are so kind-hearted that they wish for a better life for the Chinese people?
Suppose their wish came true. China became a democratic country fully adopting the American political system, impeccable in every aspect. Then a new question arises: if such a China demanded that oil trade be settled in its own currency, would the US accept it? Or to put it more simply, suppose a fully Westernized China possessed military power three times that of the US and built 500 military bases around the world. Would the US think, "Since China has fully adopted our political system and ideology, we welcome such a powerful China as our ally in the civilized world"? Is that even possible?
Democratic supporters need to stop imagining that the America of the past was morally superior. You think that America was more ethical simply because you are unaware of the ugly things it did to other countries.
