Oh, no, not at all. You questions focus on big religions was not at all clear to me, the way it was worded. I thought you were asking why i was giving smaller religions a pass.
I don't know how deep you want to go on that question. At a high level the large religions evolved to serve largely as proxy structures to create power structures for those who had no access to power via birthright.
If you were not born in to the Royal family lines, you had very little access to power, beyond being a key servant.
Big religions helped create rival structures, had their own ability to tax the citizens (tithing), had standing armies or the ability to rally armies, and put up National or INternational leaders (Pope, etc) who could often hold more sway and power then a countries King or leadership. They often negotiated with Kings and Leadership as equals and were behind the toppling or stability of many of them.
The way they accrue this power was via creating a cult and atmosphere of persuasion and allegiance to make all the sheep (flock) fall in line behind fairy tales and made up stories, that gave false answers to questions that perplexed and troubled the masses (why does the volcano erupt? what happens when we die?, etc).
