The southern US states tried to do that to. We owe US greatness to the fact that that was put down. Two diametrically opposed halves of the original USA as neighbors, side-by-side, would be a recipe for disaster and perpetual extremely destructive war.

As far as all the other struggles going on in the world, I am concerned about those struggles as well. But that is another subject. This discussion is about the Russia-Ukraine war.

Ukraine voted to not be part of Russia. Donbas is part of Ukraine. If they had a local non-monitored/influenced referendum, that is not binding. Crimea is legally still part of Ukraine.
