It is only a "choice" if one doesn't really want to earn much in their career. One of the things I despise about modern America is the need to have a college degree for literally everything. But that's the world we've created.
And that means it is no longer a "choice" but rather what you are able to do or not. If not then you will be much poorer for the entirety of your existence.
I'm 100% behind re-vamping the trade schools. That would be brilliant. But that isn't the world we have now.
Go to a trade school. No one is stopping you.
I will disagree with that Gmark. The trades do very well. Extremely well. Particularly the trade unions. I agree with the rest. Wholeheartedly.
We need more tracks available to people to make a solid living with a good income without the need to attend a 4-year college. Yeah trade schools still exist but we probably need more and we need a change in the hiring mentality of corporations. A BS isn't needed for every type of job. I bet there's plenty of jobs which could just as easily be done with out any post-high school education (other than on-the-job training) at all!
But we put up these synthetic rules that someone has to have a BA or a BS before we allow them to make good money.
I'm also not saying we don't have trades at all. We do! But we need to expand out how our society sees "trades"

I think you are focusing on a narrow sub-set.
Study after study shows that without a college degree one tends to make vastly less money over an entire career. Regardless of how well a union shop worker may fare.
My point is more to de-emphasize the need for college and re-emphasize the role of the trades.
I do because I'm about to retire and I need a workforce paying into social services (Medicare and Social Security) budgets moving forward. I don't want the next generation to wind up being enslaved by student loans that can never be paid off. Because then they will decide that worrying about the "old folks" is not in their interest at all.
I count on my country to not put me out on an iceflow because the healthy folks in the tribe don't have enough to feed themselves!
I also want for the next generation that which I was able to enjoy!
Then do not vote for Republicans.

Student loans work like this...
Some university is charging $500 for a course. Students pay $500 to take it, cash. The government comes along and says, "We want more equitable access to universities so we'll loan students $500 to take that course. The university then raises the cost of the course to $1000 and sets up an office to help students paying $500 in cash get the $500 loan to take the course...

I already did make an argument. My links back me up on it. While increases don't occur all at once, they've occurred. Tuition has vastly outpaced inflation. That means something else is driving it up, and one of those is government subsidies in the form of loans and grants.
