During the Tulsa Race Massacre, which occurred over 18 hours from May 31 to June 1, 1921, a white mob attacked residents, homes and businesses in the predominantly Black Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The event remains one of the worst incidents of racial violence in U.S. history, and, for a period, remained one of the least-known: News reports were largely squelched, despite the fact that hundreds of people were killed and thousands left homeless.


For decades, there were no public ceremonies, memorials for the dead or any efforts to commemorate the events of May 31-June 1, 1921. Instead, there was a deliberate effort to cover them up.

They're guilty of trespass, disorderly conduct, and a host of mostly other misdemeanors, and the ones that have been convicted so far confirm just that. They aren't "terrorists" nor are they guilty of "treason."

On May 31-June 1, 1921, white mobs, many of them deputized and armed by city officials, attacked Black residents, homes and businesses in Tulsa, Oklahoma. As many as 300 people were killed, 35 city blocks were destroyed, including thousands of homes and other buildings. The mob targeted the prosperous Black community of Greenwood in a vicious act of white supremacy. The resilient survivors of the massacre rebuilt their community in the following decades and Greenwood today is again being renewed after decades of neglect.

Last year, on the 100th anniversary of this brutal attack, it finally began receiving some of the attention that had been deliberately suppressed for many, many decades.
