The CSA wasn't fighting to preserve the Union. They were fighting for slavery.

To lincoln the war was about preserving the union. To the South the war was about self defense. As Jefferson Davis said " We just want to be left alone". But the north would not allow that and so invaded.

Yes indeed. It's also important to realize the so called Civil War was no such thing. The south did not want to conquer the north and take over the entire country. They wanted to secede and have nothing to do with the north. It was the north that chose to conquer the south and force them back into the union.
