U.S.: More teens smoke marijuana than cigarettes

But didn't they make that age kind of arbitrary?

yes they did

the age has to be made at some point. and if we get into the whole age of maturity thing, most westerners become uncomfortable, especially when you mention ages in the bible that women had sex and then gave birth or when male jews became men, which btw....is still celebrated to this day.

i think in any given era, age is arbitrary. one could argue biology and when humans can give birth as a compelling argument as to womanhood or manhood and they would have a damn good argument. however, if a society as a whole, says....wait....we want this later and we want youth to extend, i don't know how you reverse that, especially in a culture such as ours that seems to want to extend youth to seemingly eternity in terms of responsibility.....but...not dying for your country

What about the studies that have shown the affects that alcohol has on those that are under 21, as opposed to those over 21?

how you go from arbitrary to these supposed studies is beyond me.....

stay on topic

It was in a direct refernce to the information you had posted; where you were showing how society uses specific information to decide ages of majority.
Hasn't our current society used the information from alcohol studies, to determine the same thing?

have they? from what i recall about the history of the US drinking age...the states had different ages...ranging from 17 to 21....then the feds stepped in and said if you want fed money for your roads....raise the age to 21

if you have some studies, i would be interested....what do you think about the feds forcing states to change their drinking age?

But since we elected the officials that made this determination.
It still falls into the category of "society" making this decision.

huh....when did i say our society did not make the decision? i said our society wants to push the age out as far as possible

and if our elected reps take bribe money from the feds to accomplish this, it does not change my opinion at all

What about them?

Are you saying, "we need a centralized national govt telling us what we can do as opposed to defending our rights"?

Is there something in the constitution that gives congress the authority to do this?

Who sets this standard? The federal govt, or 50 independent states?

So many questions.

Prohibition gave birth, and feed drug cartels.:)

This seems to be going into 2 different subjects.

1. Since you acknowledge that our society is the one that determined that the drinking age needs to be 21, it's up to society to make the changes if that's what they want.

2. I'm not sure as to what you mean by "bribe money".

Studies like reefer madness?

For Alcohol?

You want to lower the age of Alcohol?

I think each state has the right to set that age limit.

My comment was only to see what Yurt thought.
I want the age of 21 to stay.

This leads to problems with cities that border 2 or more states; because as it used to be, teenagers will travel to a state with a lower age and then this results in problems within their own state.

It's been shown that the younger a person begins to drink, the more likely they are to have substance abuse problems later in life.

You mean like when people in states that border Mexico and Canada travel to them to drink at an earlier age?

Oh.

Well we've had this discussion before.

I'm drunk as well at the moment.:) But I am over the age of 21.

We no longer have an alcohol prohibition.
If you have something that disputes the studies done on teenagers and alcohol use, I would love to see it.
People don't like to feel bad and if they are unable to deal with the "bad" feelings, then they try to find ways to escape that feeling.
Some look for things that exhilirate them by skydiving, racing, etc; whereas others look for "chemical" escapes.
Teenages generally have a harder time dealing with the day to day stress and are more prone to go for the chemical escapes, whether it's alcohol, meth, downers, paint, mj, etc.
Unfortunetly; all this does is mask the feelings and when they "come down", the problems are still there.
This results in some people beginning a cycle, where eventually they end up "escaping" all the time and teenagers have a higher percentage of falling into the trap of addiction. Whether the addiction is physical or psychological.

It's been shown that the majority of teenagers haven't developed the coping skills to deal with these things and while the age of 21 may seem to be just picked out of a hat, studies have shown that normally around the age of 21(not all the time) changes in their behavior and lives tend to keep them more centered.

There's more involved, then just this quick post; but I'm not sure that anyone is going to accept more information, if they're going to automatically dismiss what has already been determined.

Studies by the govt, or independent studies?

Studies by the govt, or independent studies?

Take your pick.
There are any number of studies that were done on substance usage/abuse and the deveolopment of teens.
Most of them cover social growth, personal development, affects on schooling, etc.
If you have access to something that is counter, please post it.
