Unthinkable? Will Bush Cancel The 2008 Election?

bottom line... the people in this country will NEVER and I do mean NEVER allow a bunch of politicians to cancel elections. The military would not support the politicians in something so clearly idiotic. The end result would be a bunch of dead moronic politicians.

the reason I think it is highly unlikely, is that the rightwing power structure in this country is not emotionally dedicated to Bush the man. They're interested in maintaining power, but not at the extreme risk of an overt coup, to keep one individual man in power.

Its so much simpler, and less risky, to jury rig an election by depressing voter turnout, to get their prefered rightwing candidate elected ;)

It could happen, but something would have to happen to put the elections off... lead candidate assasinated... or devestating attack of a terror nature...Americans are a screwy bunch. They are increasingly fearful, ignorant and complacent. Hell, it wasnt long ago when americans would applaud George Bush if he wiped his ass with the constitution...

the founders were wise when the put control of the militia (i.e., the modern national guard) under the command of the State Governors. The national guard wouldn't obey bush if he tried to declare martial law and cancel the elections.

If I had to bet, I don't think bush would dare cancel the elections or declare martial law. That's not to say he doesn't dream about it.

"Governors lose in power struggle over National Guard"
To the dismay of the nation’s governors, the White House now will be empowered to go over a governor’s head and call up National Guard troops to aid a state in time of natural disasters or other public emergencies. Up to now, governors were the sole commanders in chief of citizen soldiers in local Guard units during emergencies within the state...
...Over objections from all 50 governors, Congress in October tweaked the 200-year-old Insurrection Act to empower the hand of the president in future stateside emergencies. In a letter to Congress, the governors called the change "a dramatic expansion of federal authority during natural disasters that could cause confusion in the command-and-control of the National Guard and interfere with states' ability to respond to natural disasters within their borders."

if you don't believe NG troops will kill US citizens just remember Kent State, May 4, 1970. Take Alabama NG troops and put them in LA to stop protesters, then we'll see how many die. Even if 80-90% of the troops say "hell no, I wont do it" theres always that 10-20% who will.

What kind of emergency or disaster would the neocons have create in order to have the excuses needed to declare martial law and suspend elections?
turn off the electricity to a huge part of the U.S.
blow up a nuke power plant
blow up a large midwestern city
kill a large number of Representatives or Senators
have many smaller suicide bombers blow themselves up at the same time in many diff. locations
How many nightmares can I think of?

The sad part is the unthinkable is now thinkable. If we think for even a second that our leaders will not give up power when it's time, and that they've set themselves up to rule as dictators then we're in deep doodoo.

Yeap the is still going to happen.

the machines are still in use and the R party is still willing to stop at nothing.

Theres a R in cali who is trying to get a jerrymandering effort going which would give the electoral votes out by district.

Hmm.. the supreme court was allowed to determine an election... the military is allowed to spy on americans... the legislative branch refused to check the authority of the executive... we attacked a country that did not attack us...

I would have laughed at anyone of these actions prior to this administration...

Prior to 9/11 I would have too.

It has frightened me to see how quickly and easily Americans can be manipulated, as long as they believe they are being kept "safe".

It's also very depressing.

Cypress, that is an excellent point and one I think has plenty of merit. I have more faith in the ambition of a Rudy or a Romney, than I do in the American people revolting.

Oh see, I forgot about this.

You put together all of the things they have put in place, and point out what these things could be used for, and someone calls you a moonbat.

And to people who aren't insane conspiracy theorists.

Hmmm .. "conspiracy theorists"???

Oh yeah .. that would be people who said the administration was lying about Saddam's connection to 9/11 .. and people who said the administration was lying about Saddam and WMD .. and people who said the administration simply made up the "rationale" to attack Iraq .. and people who said this administration created the Jessica Lynch story .. and people who said this administration lied about the death of Pat Tillman .. and people who said this administration created the "toppling of Saddam's statue scene" .. and people who said electronic voting was a fraud .. and people who said the "terror alerts" were being used for political purposes .. and people who said the "dry run" terror tests were a fraud created by this administration ..

"Conspiracy theorists" .. what do we call people who didn't believe the conspiracy theorists ... stupid?

Bingo

I agree super!

wow that felt good.

Americans may not be as brave or as intellectual as you may think.

The Bush Administration didn't just start fucking over this country last month. They've been doing it from the very day they TOOK office. They TOOK office and then they TOOK office again 4 years later.

And there is still a gigantic big ass elephant in the room that most Americans are too blind and/or afraid to see.

FEAR is a great motivator when it comes to Americans. We're afraid of every damn thing .. even a small nation thousands of miles away that had been under sanctions for a dozen years.

FEAR is the only weapon the Bush Adminstration needs and they know it .. and they've been weilding it since they day they TOOK office.

BINGO again.

We are an EASILY manipulated people.

The neocon horde has been doing it for years and doing it with flawed strategies that an 8th grader should have been able to figure out.

FEAR ... is all they need.

People grow weary of fear.

The body rejects is after awhile.

At some point the fear loses its meaning becasue no real threat has materialised.

I think if they create a false flag opperation to many people will be suspect of it.

If you make people TOO affraid they end up feeling they have nothing to lose and strike out at the people they see giving them no choice but fear.
