Virginia rejects $3.5 billion Ford Plant

Over fears of Chinese Communist control:

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin told Ford to take its plan to build a massive, 2,500-job EV battery plant in the state and shove it, all because Ford’s partner in the project is a Chinese battery manufacturer—the largest such manufacturer in the world.

In what can best be described as a pissing contest with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis over who can hurt their constituents more with meaningless virtual signaling, Youngkin rejected Ford’s plans for a lithium iron phosphate battery plant in Berry Hill, Virginia in late December. Ford invested serious time and money into the spot—$200 million in the site over the last 15 years, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports. It’s all gone now.

Youngkin put a stop to development on the plant due to Ford’s partnership with Contemporary Amperex Technology, a Chinese company that reigns as the largest battery manufacturer in the world.

A confused Detroit News reached out to Youngkin’s office for comment:

“While Ford is an iconic American company, it became clear that this proposal would serve as a front for the Chinese Communist party, which could compromise our economic security and Virginians’ personal privacy,” Youngkin spokesperson Macaulay Porter said in a statement to The Detroit News.

“Virginians can be confident that companies with known ties to the Chinese Communist Party won’t receive a leg up from the Commonwealth’s economic incentive packages,” she added. “When the potentially damaging effects of the deal were realized, the plant proposal never reached a final discussion stage.”

I’m sure that newfound confidence will help the folks around Berry Hill pay their bills, as the location has no new tenant. Ford is the second-largest EV builder in the U.S., after Tesla, and the Blue Oval is focusing on a strategy of building its own batteries as the automaker transitions to EVs.

The late December decision came just as DeSantis demanded the Republican legislature in Florida ban China from purchasing real estate — especially farmland — in the Sunshine State. Youngkin, who fancies himself in the running against DeSantis for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, followed suit. That’s despite China owning less than one percent of agricultural tracts in the U.S., the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.

At least those policies didn’t directly hurt the people of Virginia or Florida. Rejecting thousands of new jobs with a storied American car manufacturer, slated for an economically depressed community, sure does impact Youngkin’s constituents.

This is a lie. Ford was considering the idea, Virginia said that they do not want to be considered effectively ending the consideration because obviously the state will be offering no deal.

The plan was to play Michigan and Virginia off of each other to get the best deal in tax breaks and so forth. This is what corporations do now, they refuse to pay their own way because they have long not had to, states constantly fall for the demand to provide giveaways which greatly diminish if not erase the value of having the plants in the first place. This harming of the taxpayers has been going on for something like 40 years.

Ford is addicted to these giveaways...I expect them to pick another state....they need two otherwise the game does not work.

A few thoughts. First, who the fuck cares about "a confused Detroit News"? It's redundant anyway. Next the people of Virginia will decide if this is a good thing or a bad thing. Next you should stay out of Virgina and I'm sure they appreciate your efforts and lastly NOBODY gives a flying shit what floridafan thinks.

Who cares about the stupidity that you post?????

It BS....this plant will be built in America.
Very possible...but Mexico was alos mentioned....Just not Virginia... Why a Caligal cares...or anyone posting here crying about the jobs being denied to the "rubes", for that matter, I've not a clue....

I really doubt that, it has to be built in America to get massive federal money:

There is a fly in the ointment, however. It’s called the Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit. Officially, it’s section 45X of President Biden’s signature Inflation Reduction Act and, without revisiting the entire discussion — Motor Mouth has already covered the IRA extensively — the ultra-protectionist legislation so generously incentivizes locating battery cell plants in the U.S. that it’s hard to imagine Canada getting any new manufacturing facilities in the next 10 years.

How generous, you ask?

Well, if the IRA were enacted as currently written — and, yes, our government, as those of other car-producing countries, is negotiating for changes — the American government would give battery manufacturers US$45 for every kilowatt-hour of lithium-ion cell and module they produce over the next ten years. Only, of course, if said plant is in the United States.

No my dear you are the fucking liar

I gave up lying years ago.

Last month, Bloomberg reported that Ford wished to build a battery manufacturing facility in partnership with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL), a Chinese battery manufacturer. The companies were considering Michigan, Ford's home state, and Virginia. Days later, the Daily Caller reported that Youngkin had removed his state from consideration, citing "CATL's connection to the Chinese government" as a "major concern." In remarks to reporters after his State of the Commonwealth address last week, Youngkin confirmed the reports, saying "We felt that the right thing to do was to not recruit Ford as a front for China to America.

The Governor is trying to get name recognition. He is trailing Abbott and DeSantis.

He must think that the people in his state who might vote for him support this action, no Gov who is not an idiot would sacrifice his standing in his state for national name recognition.

Please attempt to think.

That is exactly what he is doing and why. He has visions outside the boundaries of Virginia.

Exactly. Notice how at least one poster here -- who lives in Ohio -- said that she supports both DeSantis and now Youngkin. She's not very bright and gets her "facts" from far-RW sources, so this tells us who is promoting Youngkin as some sort of hero and maybe POTUS someday, and what kind of poorly-educated morons support him.
