What did Ahmadinejad say?

One of talking points that the neocons repeat at every opportunity is that Ahmadinejad has called for "Israel to be wiped off the map". As many probably know this is a misquote due to a bad translation. However, its always good to continue to debunk this nonsense,.....

Juan Cole has the story:

As most of my readers know, Ahmadinejad did not use that phrase in Persian. He quoted an old saying of Ayatollah Khomeini calling for 'this occupation regime over Jerusalem" to "vanish from the page of time.' Calling for a regime to vanish is not the same as calling for people to be killed. Ahmadinejad has not to my knowledge called for anyone to be killed

Dr. Cole also points out that there 20k Jews in Iran including a member of Parliament. There's no evidence that they are being done away with.

Note for Bush-fans: This is not an apology for the Iranian Government. I hate theocrats. This is a statement of factual information.

I'm watching you! ;)

Heil Hitler.....

"must...support...Bush....at....all costs....must....continue....to promote....exaggerations....so.....we can....bomb iran.....must....."

I actually did not know that he never came out and said he wants to destroy Israel. So this was news to me.

for real?

You can't go a day on right wing talk radio or Fox News, without hearing outlandish claims that iran is getting ready to annihilate jews, that iran is mere weeks or months from a nuclear bomb, and that shia iran is in league with al qaeda sunni extremists - The same sunnis that are blowing up shia, and chopping their heads off.

In short: beating the drums for war. It's deja vu, isn't it>

Cypress.... it is not a Hitler like extermination of the Jews that he wants. It is the removal of the Jewish people from what he and many arabs consider the occupied land. It is the removal of Israel... not the removal of all jewish people everywhere.... that he wants(although that may be what some extremists want).

Who knew Al Jazeera was a neo-con station and mouthpiece?

Ahmadinejad: Wipe Israel off map

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has openly called for Israel to be wiped off the map.

Ahmadinejad addressed students at a conference

"The establishment of the Zionist regime was a move by the world oppressor against the Islamic world," the president told a conference in Tehran on Wednesday, entitled The World without Zionism.

"The skirmishes in the occupied land are part of a war of destiny. The outcome of hundreds of years of war will be defined in Palestinian land," he said.

"As the Imam said, Israel must be wiped off the map," said Ahmadinejad, referring to Iran's revolutionary leader Ayat Allah Khomeini.

His comments were the first time in years that such a high-ranking Iranian official has called for Israel's eradication, even though such slogans are still regularly used at government
rallies.

Ummmm. as an Arabic station, Al Jazerra could just as likely have used the bad translation from Farsi

Now the New York Times has about as much credibility as The Left Coaster but here is what the Times writer said...

And it seems like your statement of "factual information" is more like an interpretation.

"""In a June 11, 2006 analysis of the translation controversy, New York Times deputy foreign editor Ethan Bronner stated that Ahmadinejad had said that Israel was to be wiped off the map. After noting the objections of critics such as Cole and Steele, Bronner said: "But translators in Tehran who work for the president's office and the foreign ministry disagree with them. All official translations of Mr. Ahmadinejad's statement, including a description of it on his Web site (www.president.ir/eng/), refer to wiping Israel away." Bronner stated: "So did Iran's president call for Israel to be 'wiped off the map'? It certainly seems so. Did that amount to a call for war? That remains an open question."[11]"""

cawacko,

You edited out the rest of the wikipedia section, in which mutliple sources back up Dr. Cole's translation. Dr. Cole is fluent in arabic and farsi. He's a little more credible, than a NY Times OpEd writer.

Wiping "Israel away" is better than "wiping Israel from the map"? In what way?

I don't know, I don't speak any of these languages, but here is more of what Juan Cole, who does, says about it.

"I renew my call to readers to write protest letters to newspapers and other media every time they hear it alleged that Ahmadinejad (or "Iran"!) has threatened to "wipe Israel off the map." There is no such idiom in Persian and it is not what he said, and the mistranslation gives entirely the wrong impression. Wars can start over bad translations.

It was apparently some Western wire service that mistranslated the phrase as 'wipe Israel off the map', which sounds rather more violent than calling for regime change. Since then, Iranian media working in English have themselves depended on that translation. One of the tricks of Right-Zionist propagandists is to substitute these English texts for Ahmadinejad's own Persian text. (Ethan Bronner at the New York Times tried to pull this, and more recently Michael Rubin at the American Enterprise Institute.) But good scholarship requires that you go to the original Persian text in search of the meaning of a phrase. Bronner and Rubin are guilty disregarding philological scholarship in favor of mere propagandizing.

These propaganda efforts against Iran and Ahmadinejad also depend on declining to enter into evidence anything else he has ever said-- like that it would be wrong to kill Jews! They also ignore that Ahmadinejad is not even the commander in chief of the Iranian armed forces.

Anyone who reads this column knows that I deeply disagree with Ahmadinejad's policies and am not interested in defending him on most things. I profoundly disagree with his characterization of Israel, which is a legitimate United Nations member state, and find his Holocaust denial monstrous. But this quite false charge that he is genocidal is being promoted by Right-Zionists in and out of Congress as a preparatory step to getting up a US war against Iran on false pretences. I don't want to see my country destroyed by being further embroiled in the Middle East for the wrong reasons. If the Israeli hardliners and their American amen corner want a war with Iran, let them fight it themselves and leave young 18 year old Americans alone."

(this is from the link Cypress gave, that lets you follow it to Juan Cole's original piece)

And I notice that you reject Iran's official translation:

However, Iran's official Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting translated Ahmadinejad's comments as "Israel must be wiped off the map." [22]

Wiping "Israel away" is better than "wiping Israel from the map"? In what way?

"Wiping away" or "wiping off the map" is an idiom of the english language, that simply does not exist, or translate into persian. It's an artifact of the translation to english, according to Dr. Cole.

I think, and I totally believe, what was said and intended (in Farsi) was that the regime in Israel was illegitimate, and that they would like to see the "Zionist" regime in israel collapse.

I don't reject anything, I don't speak the language, I have no idea what the idiot said. I'm certainly interested in Mr. Cole's opinion on this however. I hold him in high esteem. Moreso than I do the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting station. I see you are taking the word of an enemy over the word of an American! ;)

(I am kidding about that , but I did hear it a lot when I would point out something that Hussien said, so I really can't resist)

I think that they are even more expert in the language than Cole is.

I don't think that Iran would attack Israel directly, they have Hamas in their pocket and don't need to put their own people directly in the line of fire.

Me neither. Whatever he said, he's just talking shit, just like President Cheney does.

Has anyone seen "li'l Bush" on comedy central? I saw it for the first time last night and couldn't stop laughing at lil Cheney.
