What did Ahmadinejad say?

And I notice that you reject Iran's official translation:

However, Iran's official Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting translated Ahmadinejad's comments as "Israel must be wiped off the map." [22]

I'm getting off the topic here but I do see Juan Cole has a liberal political bent. Cypress started off this thread calling out neo-cons for the American translation so to him it is obviously a political issue. Like Darla said I don't speak the language so I can't say one side or the other is right. But it's not beyond reason to say Juan Cole has his own agenda when stating his interpretation.

Of course there is always the high possibility that I am completely wrong.

I think that they are even more expert in the language than Cole is.

You're talking about an iranian government buracracy, staffed by iranian staff-level beauracrats who maybe got an english degree from the university of tehran, or maybe lived in canada for a few years. There's no guarantee that these people are "experts" in the english language, and are capable of accurately translating from their native farsi to english.

You and cawacko keep ignoring the rest of the wiki article, which backs up Dr. Cole's translation. Including the Iranian President's spokesperson.

So, Iran wants to see the zionist regime in israel collapse. Guess what? So do our "good" allies in Saudi Arabia.

Don't start dissing Juan Cole. First, it's Krugman with you, now this. I'm beginning to think you have Mad cow disease or something. I'll bet you love hamburgers don't you?

Juan Cole and Paul Krugman are liberals? What is next with you?

Oh, and on a serious note Cawacko, maybe you'd like to post another rebuttal from that non-partisan source, opinionjournal.com?

"Has anyone seen "li'l Bush" on comedy central? I saw it for the first time last night and couldn't stop laughing at lil Cheney."

Haven't seen it yet, but I want to. Everytime I see the promos for the show I start laughing.

I have no idea what Dr. Cole's politics are. He never discusses domestic american politics.

He did think the Iraq war was a bad idea. So did some paleo-cons, like Pat Buchannon. And pretty much everything Dr. Cole ever predicted about iraq has some true. To me, that makes him pretty credible.

He's lived all over the middle east, and is fluent in Farsi and Arabic. I don't know 100% for sure if he's right, but my money is on him.

They are capable of understanding that a controversy began and correcting an error, yet they let stand their translation.

And what I posted was also from that wiki article. You ignore the pieces you don't like then attempt to accuse me of the same. I believe that the good Doctor might have an agenda of their own, and I believe that the official Iranian translation holds a bit more water than a suggested translation by somebody else attempting to make them appear better for some reason.

The dude is talking "big", he does that often. He isn't going to attack Israel, nor is their "regime" going to disappear magically because he says this stuff.

Like WMD in Iraq bluff and bluster doesn't make a threat. One doesn't have to redefine their own translation of what he said to deny the enormity of the "threat" level.

It is funny as hell. My wife was asking, "Who is Darth Vader?" I couldn't believe it.

The lil Cheney, and this noise he makes, is so funny. I can imitate it, but not in writing. I love it.

They target everybody associated with him; apparently the NYT has called the show something like "crude and tasteless", and this is being used on Comedy Central to promote the show. I still can't believe how far they're willing to go but you're right, it's funny as hell! :D

They aren't very nice to Hillary and Co either.

I don't put Cole and Krugman is the same group. Krugman is so far off the charts economically he gives Mao, Lenin and Castro wet dreams.

I just went to Cole's website to see what he's about because I've heard his name before. Take a look at the center-right hand side of his website where he has advertisers and links to blogs. Look at those and tell me this guy is not a liberal. There arel links to probably 50 liberal or Democatic sites. www.juancole.com

LOL. Krugman is a pro-free trader, so maybe it's not him who is "off the charts economically"?

Are liberals to be discounted in this country Cawacko? Are they dogshit? Oh look at his website, he's got links to "liberal sites". What do you want to do, put him in Gitmo? Or just claim that because he might be liberal, he couldn't possibly have a legitimate or correct opinion about anything?

You've got to be kidding.

There's no question opinion-journal has a right-lean to it. I would never question that.

In fairness, the bush economic hit team, has perhaps, made Krugman appear "off the charts". When in fact, it is they who are off the charts. But if you are off the charts yourself, how do you find the center? And how do you, once in the center, figure out what is slightly left of center, and what is "off the charts"?

You really can't.

It is important to know where somebody sits before attempting to understand and evaluate their opinion. If one is liberal they may have an agenda in their opinion, just as a righty might. I've always been one for the "horse's mouth". What did Iran say he said? Well, they said he stated what was translated.

I wish I spoke Farsi, I'd like to know for myself. I always get annoyed at the Russian translations on the news, they are often off by enough that people could get the wrong idea.
