What If Trump Loses In 2020 And Refuses To Accept The Results Or Leave Office?

As usual, CNN gets it all wrong. The question should be rephrased; What If Trump WINS In 2020 and, Democrats once again, refuse to accept the results?

Will we see another four year whine fest of lies, distortions, hyperbole and innuendo against this President?

Of course we will. They haven't stopped for the last 3 years, another 4 more will surely "wind them up" and they'll go crazy

Hello Jack,

He will be reduced to babbling. It will be worse than Nixon. Ya know he wants to believe in himself so badly. If only his entire life wasn't so fake.

... it will be ANOTHER conspiracy. It will be fun to watch (... along with watching the Red Team Drama Queens here at JPP)

If you cheat your way through life and then you take a very high profile job which requires you to not cheat you have a problem.

Then you'd best stay at flippin' burgers, we wouldn't want you in a "high profile job."

Man, you know you're getting old when you hear the same things over and over. First it was Clinton wasn't going to leave office. Then it was Bush wasn't going to leave office. Now it's Trump isn't going to leave office...

You left out the Reichwingers' screeching about how Obama won't leave office.

"(CNN)President Donald Trump's critics are increasingly focused on the question of which Democrat will challenge him for the presidency in 2020. It's an important question, but another one might be even more important: Regardless of who runs in 2020, if Trump loses, will he leave the Oval Office peacefully?

Let's start with why we need to ask this question: Trump is increasingly proving himself to be a President eager to overstep his authority. Just last week, Trump displayed his willingness to invoke unprecedented presidential power to declare a national emergency utterly without justification. This week has brought a startling report from the New York Times that, for the past two years, Trump has tried to undermine the investigations by Special Counsel Robert Mueller and other parts of the Justice Department in order to, in the words of the Times, "make the president's many legal problems go away." In light of these overreaching assertions of his own authority, it's at least plausible that Trump might attempt to cling to power in ways previously unimaginable by an American president.

Thankfully, there are four steps that key actors across the American system of governance can take to get ahead of this possibility.

Remember, when Trump was merely a private citizen running for President in 2016, he became the first presidential candidate in recent memory to refuse to commit that he'd honor the results of the election if he lost. Now, he occupies the Oval Office. He's the commander in chief of the most powerful military on Earth. If he even hints at contesting the election result in 2020, as he suggested he might in 2016, he'd be doing so not as an outsider but as a leader with the vast resources of the US government potentially at his disposal.
Trump's unrelenting assaults on the media and intelligence community, augmented by his baseless insistence on widespread voter fraud, have laid the groundwork for him to contest the election results in worrisome ways by undermining two institutions Americans would count on to validate those results.

As the 2018 midterms approached, Trump appeared to preview exactly such behavior. He tweeted that he was "very concerned that Russia will be fighting very hard to have an impact on the upcoming Election" and "pushing very hard for the Democrats." Without pointing to even a shred of analysis from the intelligence community, media reports or any other sources, Trump seemed to dangle the notion that, if the elections went too badly for the Republicans, he might allege foreign interference with the vote tally to cast doubt on the validity of the results.
In 2020, with his reelection on the line, the stakes for Trump himself are, of course, wildly bigger.
All told, there's real reason to worry here. So, what can be done now to avoid a potential constitutional crisis and ensure that the 2020 election results -- whatever they might be -- are respected and that any transfer of power occurs peacefully?
While many of us worry that President Trump has fallen woefully short in addressing foreign election interference through social media that can change American voters' minds, there's nonetheless an obvious imperative to respect the actual vote tally unless the intelligence community indicates that malicious actors have directly altered it (which would be unprecedented). Thankfully, there are four key sets of governmental actors across the United States that can commit now to certain steps that would help to isolate President Trump should he refuse to hand over power peacefully.

Seriously?? It is YOU liberals who STILL haven't accepted the 2016 election results. It is YOU liberals who wanted to impeach Trump BEFORE he even took office. Maybe you should stop projecting your own issues onto others for a change??

If Trump loses, he probably won't accept the results. He'll say the election was rigged by the Deep State and blah blah blah.
Now that doesn't bother me, Trump is just one mentally challenged loser who's probably going to die from his drug addiction soon. What actually does scare me is that the entire Republican party will support Trump's decision to not accept the election.

True, but none of the names you mentioned gave any indication that they if they lost an election it was "fixed" or "rigged." Some supporters may have, but never from the top down

Hard to deny that Trump does have autocratic tendencies, and that he would say anything if he thought he could sell it that forty percent who wouldn't care if he shot Mother Theresa on 5th Avenue, so the topic post's question isn't all that inane, probably not realistic, but not totally irrelevant

That line about not accepting the last election is so lame, and old at this point, I'll even ping pong it for you, you people are still mad cause America elected a black guy President, twice, and by substantial majorities each time

Ok. Like I said, I've heard people who don't like the President make this charge before. Wake me when it happens.

But have you ever heard complaints from a losing candidate calling the election "fixed," "rigged," or "illegal?" Or and candidate saying those things who had a following who thinks anything he says is the truth?

How about this, if Trump loses the election and refuses to leave office I will credit folks ITT. Until that happens feel free to spend your time worrying about it. It's not high up on my list of priorities or things I have even a modicum of control over.

Hello cawacko,

President Trump has presented himself as an outsider who intended to 'shake things up.'

He created a whole narrative before the 2016 election that it was rigged.

He refuses to accept reality.

He faces possible criminal charges the moment he is not President.

2+2

Knowing him as well as we do by now, I would actually be SURPRISED if he gracefully accepts a narrow defeat.

It would make me wonder who he is and what happened to the real Donald Trump.

He IS the real dump.

YOU were fooled.

Not to mention I never heard anyone say Clinton or Bush wasn't going to leave office.

He's FOS!

I've never heard that either. It's only been the RWers and their conspiracy theories about presidents-turned-dictator. Of course now that we have the Wannabe Emperor sliming up our WH, the he-won't-leave-when-he-loses scenario seems a bit more plausible, eh?

You don't remember fringe people on the right claiming Bill Clinton wouldn't leave office? I do. And I remember the same for Bush. Not sure I remember it for Obama but if there were fringe folks who did I wouldn't be surprised.

People claiming a President won't leave office isn't new to today.

Edit: I'm not suggesting there were large numbers of people making these claims just that these claims came from fringe groups.

Nah, it is still just as relevant today as it was three years ago. You LOST. Get over it.

I'll even ping pong it for you,
Uh oh, here comes more lefty projection...

He's no longer President; his signing moronic policies into law is over and done with.

Knowing Donald Trump as well as we do now, this is exactly what I would expect him to do.

If he loses the 2020 election, and it's anywhere close, he is going to refuse to accept the results, refuse to leave the office, refuse to even arrange for an inauguration of the next President.

It will be a big stink just like everything else with him has been right from the start. There will be a few months of some VERY interesting news. He will exhaust all his powers trying to undo the inevitable, but he won't be able to change the facts. He will call it fake news, call it a fake election, say Russia interfered to favor his opponent, whatever. Nothing will be off the table with him.

But he will only be fooling himself and his most die hard cult followers.

The next President would have to arrange their own inauguration without him.

As of noon on January 20, 2021, Donald Trump would no longer be President. It doesn't matter if he won't leave the WH or the Oval Office. The military and all other security people would no longer answer to him, no longer have to follow his orders. Everyone is sworn to honor the Constitution and that means they answer to the current President, whomever that may be.

Let's just hope there is no violence.

And there may come a point where Donald Trump has to escorted out of the WH.

And I hope law enforcement is there with handcuffs, ready to arrest him.
I give it a probability of zero percent that Donald Trump will hunker down in the white house after - AGAIN - losing the popular vote and this time hypothetically losing the EC in 2020.

I think the overwhelming preponderance of evidence is that Donald Trump is a coward, who is full of bluster, but always quick to fold in the end.

I still marvel at the claim he made that he would keep the government shut down for years if the Democrats didn't cave on giving him his border wall.

There is no threat Donald Trump can make that should be believed.

Donald Trump is one in a long line of weak cowards who are quick to puff themselves up, but just as quick to fold.
