Probably MAGAs are angry because the mermaid is played by a black female actress.

Mermaids are mythical creatures, as far as I'm concerned they could be imagined as white, black, green, or purple.

If it isn't white 1950's America, where black roles are more along the lines of what we saw in "Gone w/ the Wind"....it's "woke."

Woke is nothing but an aggrievement term used by whites afraid they are being replaced from the top of the racial status chain. What is woke about it is exactly that to them. They replaced a white girl with a black one and the butthurt commences.

Did "whites" invent the word woke?

The Regressives are serious about forcing us to go back in time......they are the Western equivalent of the Taliban.....and they are winning big....have faced almost no resistance....because Americans are now in the main ignorant cowards.

Look! Let's just cut through the chase!

Republicanism is a personality disorder. I refer to it as the Hateful personality. They are going to find something to hate no matter what!

You could take all of the minorities out of the mix, and take all the democrats out of the mix, and even take all of the gays out of the mix, DEAD AND GONE FOR ALL PRACTICAL PURPOSES, and they would still find other people to hate within themselves.

Then they would be dicing and slicing themselves all up between their religions, and by what state they lived in, what sports or sport teams they support, hating between rich and poor, the ugly vs. the attractive, men hating women, and women hating men, by size and shape of their bodies, married vs. single, and you name it! They will never run out of ideas on who they will hate next.

Republicans do not discriminate who they hate, they will hate anyone that does not agree with them on any subject- and it is determined on a personal basis, not a group consensus.

Even now, Republicans hate their very own- because they do agree on who they want to lead their hateful party.

But, you can bet your sweet ass, the Republicans are going to select and vote for the most hateful son-of-a-bitch to lead them.

It's all about the hate!

Because we are talking about hateful people here who are unable to tolerate anyone who does not agree with every exact thing they do personally.

Republicans are incapable of having a DEBATE- because all they choose to do is BERATE others instead- for just having an opinion that does not agree with theirs.

I don't know about "woke" (a negative catch phrase for anyone perceiving a "liberal" ideology being implemented.), but I do have a personal bone to pick about this.

For years, I have been against or VERY skeptical of what I call "stunt casting". That's when characters in a fictional story that has become traditional in our society are changed racially or ethnically or sexually to garner a larger viewing audience...or to breathe "new life" into the story.

It was done with Sherlock Holmes, when Watkins was turned into a woman psychiatrist..played by Lucy Liu. This actually worked due to good writing and acting, so it was not only enjoyed by 20 something's who never heard of the old b/w movies with Basil Rathbone or the PBS series or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's books .

It was done with Kojak when the lead character was turned into a black man played by Ving Rhames. I didn't watch the one shot pilot and I didn't hear there was anything after that.

It was done with the Marvel Comics to movies, when they turned the character of Nick Fury into a black man, played by Samuel L. Jackson. That would change the entire history of Marvel Comics on the character for anyone over 25. I understand that the current movie series had the original Captain America retiring and handing over the mantel to his partner The Falcon (who is black).

I could go on, but my point is this: you had my parents and grand parents grow up and old watching movies and TV that barely acknowledged black Americans...and when they did it was usually stereotype. But yet these were the generations that fought long and hard against lynchings, Jim Crow, etc. and had major successes...one of which is my being able to function in this society as I do now.

I don't ever recall my grandparents or parents losing their identity or having debilitating emotional/mental trauma (at least no more that black folk have to endure) or feelings of inadequacy.

This is why I find all this hoop-la over the "lil mermaid" to be quite dumb. Bottom line: black children born in the last 40 years should be able to enjoy a story that does not include them. I did, as did my father and my grand father. Yes, it should be told on equal footing with all of America's fiction and non-fiction that the word "cowboy" was to describe black farm/frontier workers...the FIRST real cowboys. As with all aspects of American history and life. But that doesn't mean we paint all things black that traditionally and historically was not.

The bigoted and racist factions of our society will automatically balk at such things, as to be expected for their usual reasons...the advocates will point out that "it's a fairy tale, it's not real. Why not change the race of the characters?" Well, I seriously doubt that black folk across America would sit still if the story of John Henry would be portrayed in a movie by John Cena or Dave Bautista!

It works both ways. Remember, the major studios are just looking to put asses in the seats .... and a larger chunk of 14% of the population means more revenue. They'll back off if the bucks aren't breaking better than even on this type of thing. So while I applaud that more black actors are getting work, I have to fold my arms at this trend.

And the band played on.

Why are you so fucking concerned about shit geared to kids?

Wow, all Bin Laden wanted was for a Black actress to play a mermaid? If that were true, we could have avoided 9/11 at the beginning, and had a Black actress play a mermaid.

Walter, can you imagine how Black people would react to a movie with Tom Cruise playing the part of Martin L. King?

Think before you post, Walter.

Can you imagine how Eastern Mediterranean people would react if Jesus or Santa Claus was played by a Northern European? Yes, because it happens all the time.

But mermaids are different. They are fictional. They can be imagined in whatever color you want.

As for Tom Cruise playing Martin Luther King, I doubt anyone would care.

If Disney made Jasmine white it would be the same thing

The point is not to mess with the Disney things we grew up with just because it’s politically correct
