What is woke about the lil mermaid?

I don't overthink movies. I watched the movie with the background that I absolutely loved the original. I enjoyed the hell out of the movie, the rest is just intellectual bs, sorry.

Well, again... I didn't bring up the subject or start this thread.

The OP asked a question, which I answered with my opinions on the subject.

But I think the issue rates more than "who cares, it's just a movie".

It smacks of social engineering and manipulation.

A lot of people don't like the idea of the media intentionally manipulating social trends.

They already have vast influence over us as it is.

I don't think they need to go a step further.

And then there's the whole double standard issue.

Etc, etc.

My personal list of movie casting outrages

Unacceptable -->

Abraham Lincoln was played by a British actor, not an American one.

Oscar Schindler played by an Irishman, not a German actor.

The hobbits in LOTR were played by normal sized actors, not little people.

Any movie American actors feign fake English accents to portray Brits

So let me ask you.... prior to getting these roles, had British, Irish and normal sized actors been engaging in a loud public protest and outcry over not being given (as in handed to them in a preferential manner due to their ethnicity) the kinds of parts they felt they should be getting more of?

Was the fact that British, Irish and normal sized actors respectively, were given these roles... based on their ethnicity and the fact that they had complained loudly, forcefully and publicly about not getting these kinds of roles? Or was it some other reason?

Was their getting these roles a response and reaction to these kinds of public complaints and done only to mollify them and keep them quiet and not hurling accusations of some kind of "ism" at the movie studios?

Because if not, the comparison is apples to oranges.

I was just kidding around. I don't care that the Irishman Liam Neeson was given the role the German Oskar Schindler.

Movies are a business, a capitalist enterprise, and they are going to hire actors that play to a movie's commercial success. The old commercial model of hiring only white actors isn't good business anymore

I knew you were being facetious, but I'm convinced you were doing it to make a point.

No problem.

As for it being a good business model, I have to wonder about that.

We all know that blacks only account for 12% of the US population. And given that it's a statistical impossibility that all of that 12% are movie goers, I'd say maybe half or so of that 12%, (6%) might be potential candidates to go to the theater and buy tickets to see it.

That leaves whites, Hispanics, Asians and others to fill the coffers.

Will they?

Remains to be seen.

If the movie does well, their gamble paid off.

If not, it will end up more like Batgirl.

EDIT: And I'm not suggesting hiring only white actors. If you go back and read what I said, it was that maybe they should concentrate on creating new characters and new roles for black actors to play, rather than traditional old roles already played by white actors.

So why do you think Hollywood seeks to appease African-Americans, gays and other minorities?

So why do you think Hollywood seeks to appease African-Americans, gays and other minorities?

Could be they're afraid of the negative media publicity?

Getting accused of racism and homophobia?

Boycotts of films?

And I don't think they're doing that with regard to other minorites.

You don't see it with Hispanic or Asian actors.

Women, blacks and alphabets are the three "squeaky wheel" groups.

They are the ones being pandered to in the media.

I think I care less than you.

Non-hispanic whites are only 60 percent of the population and dropping fast. The days when 95 percent of actors are going to be Caucasian are over, and more minority faces in film is just going to be a business reality. I didn't even really think about it very much until I saw this thread. I wouldn't be surprised if the next Beauty and the Beast reboot has an actress of Asian heritage in the lead role.

I’m old enough to remember some people’s outrage when they began to feature blacks and mixed race couples in commercials. There was the same reaction from people then as with the Little Mermaid, now. They survived then, they will survive now!

Negative publicity from what? Making Ariel a redheaded Irish lass in the live action fantasy like they did in the 1989 cartoon fantasy?

IDK. Why do you think so?

Boycotts used to stand against injustice. Now they've been weaponized to push injustice.

Then why do they do it?

Actually, we do, but less than the percentage of the population. Remember all the whining about brownfacing? I record old movies , mostly westerns, on my Tablo. There was a lot of brown-facing then; Europeans playing Native Americans, Hispanics, etc. Yesterday it was Spencer Tracey playing Manuel in "Captain's Courageous". A few weeks ago it was Marlon Brando playing Emiliano Zapata.

What do you have against Freedom of Speech?

It's all about the money. What do you have against capitalism? It's the machine that powered our nation's wealth. Only the fucking morons look in their own yard for the answers. Making movies is expensive. White faces only constitute 15% of the global population. International markets are big business.

Yep, racists have existed forever. This is an interesting lab in which to observe their bizarre behavior.

Before Sigourney Weaver in Aliens, female actors were basically not allowed to be tough and lethal action heroes. They pretty much got limited to delicate flower roles, or the evil bitch roles.

I don't think anyone under the age of 80 bats an eye anymore at a Lara Croft tomb raider or Jennifer Lawrence, Hunger Games film.

It will be a reality if the films do well financially.
The industry is in the toilet right now.
