were the east Germans communist?

It is almost as if you lob these softball questions over the plate, in the hopes that RJS will come along and hit it out of the park, once more for the gipper? How stupit can you be, where did you get your degree, the back of a cereal box? Of course East Germany w as communist, just like West Germany was communist, until The Gipper came along and told Yeltsin, "Mr. Yeltsin, tear down this wall"? And the very next day Yeltsin tore down the wall separating the West and East parts of Communist Germany from Yugoslavia, whose people, the checkoffs, had been held in virtual slavery by the german commies, butt, were now free, this is history, maybe you should read a book? Thank you.

Yeah, but Gipper thought they spoke the language Latin, in Latin America. So, I wouldn't cite Gipper as an authoritative source on world history or culture.

The greatest thing about communism was that it drove the best, brightest and hardest working people in the countries it was employed, into countries like America where they had economic freedom and they contributed a lot to the strength of our nation.
Also building on that, communism showed why all leftism is destined to fail, because it relies on doers who are denied the fruits of their labor and eventually leave the country (if they are free to) or just stop doing.

You know guys, sometimes I just like to start random threads for no other reason than to put "Ron Paul" in them. He wins no matter what. It amuses me.

the greatest thing about communism is that it doesn't work!
This should have the qualifier, "On a large scale" added to it.

Communism often has worked on small scales, it is when it becomes a centralized state government where if fails so miserably.

Nothing wrong with government, even small hippy communes have governments. It is when the people become disenfranchised, when government no longer represents them that problems occur.

Even a centralised government can work if it represents the will of the people through democratic processes...

So far, it is full of Phail. With each successive failure it seems that it becomes more like a religion than a realistic form of centralized government.

However this "government" crap you added was pretty weak, considering I stated that it worked on smaller-scales, it is when it becomes the central national government that it fails so remarkably.

Communism became wound up with totalitarianism.

Its a failed ideology, that doesn't work in the real world. Much like libertariansim

I'm sorry what was that, Che?

Could you speak up?

The main difference between the two is that there have been Communist Governments. The spectacular starvation, literal third-world living conditions, and finally the capitalism that brings them out of such squalor shows that it simply reeks as a centralized government.

Communism, yes, but I was referring to centralised government...

Communism fails because it relies to heavily on the existence of human virtues that few humans possess. We'd need to be all like Jesus.

However Marx makes more than vaild points in his critique of capitalism, points that are still relevant today....

Capitalism fails on a daily basis too...
