Where Do Confederate Monuments Go After They Come Down?

Van Turner has a secret: He knows the whereabouts of the controversial Confederate statues removed last year from two parks in Memphis, Tenn.

"They have to be kept in a secretive location," said Turner on a recent afternoon, standing in a park overlooking the Mississippi River where one of the statues — of Confederate President Jefferson Davis — once stood. "For fear of someone trying to go in and get them."

Turner, a Shelby County commissioner, has been hiding the Jefferson Davis statue since it came down in December, along with a statue of Confederate Gen. and slave trader Nathan Bedford Forrest and a bust of Confederate Capt. Harvey Mathes.

They're among the more than 45 Confederate monuments that have come down in at least 27 cities across the country since last summer, when white supremacists rallied in Charlottesville, Va., to protest the removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. In the aftermath, counterprotester Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old paralegal, was killed. The violence amplified calls for the removal of such monuments and spurred an ongoing debate over whether tributes to the Confederacy have a place in public spaces.

Amid that debate, cities like Memphis are now dealing with a different problem: what to do with the controversial statues once they're removed from public spaces. In many cases, they remain hidden in storage while municipalities decide their fate.

Put them were they belong, with other dead things, in a confederate skull orchard

I read some were put in museums. They are a part of southern history telling us about who fought to break the country apart and keep blacks in slavery. Read this board and you will see lots of people have not moved on from those positions. They should not be treated with respect or dignity.

Where should they go?

The garbage, or melted down to make new statues to victims of police brutality.

Why do we need statues even in a museum? These statues are glorifying traitors. They don't belong in museums. What's the point? "Here's a monument to Confederate Racist General Billy Bob Cousinfucker". Not sure there's any educational or historical value to pretending these monuments constructed to intimidate black people are anything other than that. If they were to appear in a museum, they should appear as examples of institutionalized racism poor white trash used to intimidate black people post-Civil War and during Jim Crow. That was their only intrinsic value. So if you preserve these monuments, they should only go to serve the history of oppression and racism in post-Civil War America.

Maybe you should try to remove the monuments at Gettysburg, they're on public land...

I'm not talking about removing monuments to Union soldiers...I'm talking about removing monuments to Confederate soldiers.

If you remove the monuments, you either destroy them, melt them down to use for new monuments, or put them in a museum to show how Confederate sore losers used them to intimidate black people post-Civil War.

And what makes you think only Union monuments are at Gettysburg? There are many monuments there representing the South and Confederate soldiers.

And those monuments should come down. Why build a monument to a traitor who lost? Because you want to intimidate black people.

It has nothing to do with race, nothing whatsoever.
Keep in mind that it was us rural uneducated Pennsylvanian hillbillies who stopped the South from getting anywhere past the Pennsylvania/Maryland boarder.
You don't think it was those Pittsburgh and Philadelphia liberals, do you? As we did with our land, we will protect our monuments, too. Just try to remove them...

The whole reason these statues were erected was to intimidate black people. Most of the statues weren't raised until the 20th century, in the 30's and 40's, long after the Civil War, but right during Jim Crow.

So they were built entirely because of race; and were built on public and state land as a means to intimidate black people in the public space.

OH Mr. Bill we can't have statues that remind us of the horrors of slavery! If we get rid of them we can hide that awful part of American history. Typical liberal thinking.

Which is why it makes no sense for Pennsylvanians to support the Confederates today.

You're protecting monuments to people you fought and defeated.

Cognitive dissonance.

Monuments to Confederate war criminals don't remind us of slavery.

You mush have been daydreaming during middle school history class, or maybe didn't get that far yet.
Intimidation is not the intent, and every intelligent American knows this. Why must you make it that way?

Of course intimidation was the intent; that's why these statues are on public land.

That's why they were built 50-60 years after the Civil War had ended.

It was racist white Conservatives trying to intimidate black people in the public space by erecting monuments to losers who fought to preserve slavery.

Bullshit. As I suggested, just try and remove them from Gettysburg.

Not BS; completely true. There's no other reason to erect these monuments other than intimidating black people.

And you keep going to Gettysburg like it's supposed to mean something? You can take down all the monuments at Gettyburg that honor the Confederate soldiers while keeping the monuments to the union ones intact.

We will keep them ALL intact.

How come? You want to honor traitors? Does that mean you're a traitor? Someone who wants to honor a traitor is likely a traitor themselves.

They are a reminder of our history (not saying it was good) and Americans from both sides.
They will stay.
