Doubtful given the circumstances, the professor WAS trying to force his way in. So it certainly would have given the appearance of such since that was indeed what he was doing. If the neighbors were unable to identify him from their vantage point and simply saw him forcing his way in, they did the right thing.

now if they could see it was him, then they are assholes for calling the cops and quite possibly racists.

Well, given the article stated he was with a 'driver' I would assume he wasn't in his car and that instead he had someone else drive him in another vehicle. As for recognizing him, not sure... I dont know if the neighbor simply couldn't see from the vantage point available to her or if it was at night (dont recall the article stating that).

Or perhaps the neighbor did recognize him and was simply being a racist asshole.
