He was appointed VP . He did not get elected. He came in when Agnew was forced to resign for taking Republican type bribes. Nixon threw Constitutional experts into a frenzy. Ford was a place filler that the Dems approved because he was not taken seriously. The Dems allowed Ford to become VP because they did not want a serious Repub to get the power of incumbency.
