Where are Deep Purple, Free, Rory Gallagher, Gary Moore, Thin Lizzy, Blur, Radiohead, Oasis, Doobie Brothers, Jethro Tull and Def Leppard?
I think Deep Purple is in...if not...they belong on this list. Ditto for Thin Lizzy, Doobies, Jethro Tull and Def Leppard. I don't think Radiohead is eligible yet.

I mean that's what is fucked up about the RnR HoF. They can induct groups who made lots of money producing ear candy for tween but ignore those masters who are such obvious choices as the Doobies and Jethro Tull.

None of those are in.

BTW Ya'll....as any Hoople can tell you. The RnR HoF is definately worth seeing. Now I know most people don't place Cleveland high on their list of vacation destinations......but just ask any Hoople.....CLEVELAND ROCKS!!!

I've always wondered, who did Cleveland have to fuck to get the Hall of Fame?......

They don't really have a set of identifiable critieria to clarify what makes one band make, and one get cut. With something like the football HOF, you can look at a position, look at the stats, and say "this guy is a HOF'er." RNR is WAY too subjective - they have artists who have sold incredibly well, and others who haven't, but some of their omissions in both of those categories are inexplicable.

It's becoming the "Pop Music" HoF

Oh, no doubt, but it's been that way from the beginning, imo. "Rock & roll" means a certain thing to me, as I'm sure it does w/ most people, and offhand I'd say a good half of the inductees don't really merit the strict interpretation of that term.

I'm okay with it being pop music, but it should really be for those artists who have had an exceptional impact, either in terms of influencing their peers (poor selling artists like the Ramones & Stooges would clearly qualify here), or in terms of creating their own niche in the history of music and defining trends on a national or international scale.

On that last count, I have no problem with ABBA; like it or not, they were positively huge, and their sales weren't based on a gimmick. They wrote & performed good pop music, and sold it on a nearly unprecedented scale. Sales is a valid criteria, imo.

Here's the thing about Halls of Fame... they have to induct new members each year! If they already had all the really great choices picked and in there, who would they pick next year? So, while it seems an injustice these bands are not in, we should remember, they are not in YET... they will be, one day.

But it was like I was discussing with a friend last night about this, whether you want to admit it or acknowledge it, "pop music" is a part of rock and roll music. I know that sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard to rock purists, but that is the fact of the matter. Another aspect that is interesting, many of the early rock and roll bands, would never have success today as a rock band, they would be classified as country.

Maybe we need a boycott of the RnR HoF until they get rid of the present committee and find a more inclusive manner of determing their members other then a bunch of like minded NY City art house snobs who are pretty clueless about rock music.

"Pop" isn't music any more than me banging pots and pans filled with horny cats is. It's annoying and a waste of time.
