I remain unimpressed with this argument. The universe of possible results from any legislation that prohibits a behavior is a sliding scale from 100% effective in eliminating the behavior to not at all and all points in between. Do I know how effective increased scrutiny of the background of people we allow to legally procure guns will be? No. But neither do you. You implied argument can be extended as I have to any law prohibiting any conduct. Your argument is essentially that people who break laws, break laws, so there is no sense having any laws. That's just a tautology. The idea that the liberty lost versus the gains made do justify a movement in the status quo is a reasonable debate. The OP does not frame a reasonable debate.

Then it appears that instead of having the existing laws enforced; you would rather just keep creating new laws, until you are satisfied.
I've proposed a similar argument, on this same scale; but liberals seem to want to dismiss it.
Since more people die from DUI accidents, then do by firearms; what would be wrong with passing a law that would make every vehicle to be equipped with an ignition lockout system?
This would stop drunk drivers from being able to borrow a car, buy a different one, or even steal one; to where they could still drive drunk.
Plus; since no one knows who might drive drunk, it would curtail ANYONE from being able to do so.

Are you also in favor of such legislation?
