Why did Donald Trump switch parties?

I never paid attention to politics so I didn't know or care what his affiliation was. Then I read that he was a longtime Democrat but switched to Republican recently. Why? Could this be a reason Democrats hate him so much?

Trump has switched party's like five times.

He's been a democrat twice, a republican twice an independent and for a time registered without a party.

He went republican this time because he knew he had no chance to get the nomination over Sanders and Clinton.

But Trump really has no party affiliation which you can see from his fighting with republicans, he is an opportunist. Although when you look at some of his policies you can see he is all over the board.

He is certainly not religious, he is not against banning guns as he did with the bump stock, he is most definitely not pro-war, he cares nothing about abortion.

What we see is him making a bunch of campaign promises to win an election, for the party he decided to run with, and keeping those but does he actually have any belief in them?

I don't think so, but he has to do it to maintain power.

Trump likes to be in power and will do whatever it takes to get that, had he had a shot in the democratic party he would have went that way instead, with different campaign promises that he would be fulfilling today.

Basically Trump is someone with no views, he is a representative of those who elect him which ultimately is what a true politician should be.

We elected him to do certain things and he is doing it very effectively but not out of beliefs held by him, he's doing it because he likes being president.

The only other president similar to this was Eisenhower who also had no party affiliation or deeply held beliefs, In fact both sides were courting him to be their nominee. He mused over this for a long time but eventually chose the republicans because he was military and felt they had a slightly stronger military belief. His actions after election were determined by the party that elected him, not by anything he believed profoundly in. He just wanted the presidency.

But Eisenhower enstated new taxing systems, Trump is cutting taxes and eliminating policies. When it comes to politics it's difficult to trust online sources. Trump is right about misinformation.

Political parties are just special interest authoritarians dripping from their lips lusting for power over the masses to socially engineer them to obey the dictates of the special interest. They're the scourge & scum of the earth.

Whatever he calls himself, he is kick ass at everything he does and unmatched in charisma.

Like yourself, Trump has the charisma of a turd in a punch bowl.

Hating the diseased orangutan in the Oval Office with a flaming passion is the minimal requirement for being a sane human being.

I never said their policies were similar, I said they were similar in the fact related to party affiliation which neither of them has.

Do you know that IKE never once mentioned the word republican in any campaign ad?

Why do you think that is?

He was running for president, not a party just as Trump is running for himself, not any allegiance to some deep held beliefs.

He thought he had a better chance if he ran as a Republican

Nope. Thinking people dislike him because he’s an incompetent, pathologically lying, human piece of shit.

I pretty much agree w/ your take except he isn't just the president of those who voted for him & playing merely to that base could lead to his losing the next election. Bigly if the dems can manage to come up w/ a strong, even somewhat charismatic leader/candidate, that base won't be enough IMHO..

Ike wasn't persuing new tax policies. He simply never bothered to roll back the taxes instituted by FDR.

No. Trump once joined the Reform party for awhile, but other than that has always been a Republican.

Because people in NYC know trump's history and they know his con , the people in flyover country are less educated were the perfect marks for him and they happen to be republicans

NO; the reason Democrats hate Donald so much is that he embarrassed them by winning when they were absolutely, positively sure Hillary had it in the bag.

The media hate Donald because he had the gall to shove their stupidity and lies back into their faces and call them out.
