While blissful ignorance certainly seems like the goal for most, bible reading is hardly the thing to mitigate that.
Actually it's a cool thing to do. At about the time my faith was starting to crumble I decided I should make a solid effort to read the Bible front to back. So I did that (using an NSRV so I didn't go mad trying to puzzle out a KJV!)
It's some amazing stuff. You find some of the cool GOOD things you might have missed before. Some interesting insights into other people's thoughts. Some horrific crimes against all things good, often at the command of or with the full support of God, himself!
Then there's the weird stuff that just sit out there on their own. A donkey talking apropos of nothing. A guy who tries to actually save the Ark of the Covenant from falling on the ground gets struck down by God. Never figured that one out.
The hardest part, hands down, was the Book of Numbers. Dreadful lists of tribes and geneaologies and ....gah, it was like reading someone's financial records.
Wildest out of your mind fun: Ezekiel. If Ezekiel wasn't a schizophrenic he was doing some serious psychedelics.
Worst Substitute for even Soft Core Porn: Song of Songs. No matter how people try to tell us we are all titillated by the poem that is this book it will never rise to the level of titillation for me.
